Prepare the yellow cake mix according to package directions, using the required eggs, oil, and water, and bake in a 9×13 pan.
Allow the cake to cool for a few minutes, then refrigerate for about 2 hours until fully cooled.
Once cooled, use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes all over the cake, pushing down to the bottom.
In a bowl, whisk together 2 (3.4 oz) packages instant banana pudding mix and 4 cups milk until smooth and lump-free.
Pour the pudding evenly over the cake, spreading it out and gently pressing it into the holes.
Spread 1 (8 oz) tub thawed whipped topping evenly over the top of the cake.
Crush 20 vanilla wafers, leaving some larger pieces for texture, and sprinkle over the cake just before serving.
