Ingredients

  • 1 3.6 oz box chocolate pudding mix
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 15.2 oz box chocolate cake mix
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup water
  • 12 oz chocolate chips

Optional Toppings:

  • Ice cream
  • Hot fudge sauce
  • Caramel sauce
  • Whipped cream

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together 1 (3.6 oz) box chocolate pudding mix and 2 cups whole milk according to the package directions. Set aside once thickened.
  • In another bowl, combine 1 (15.2 oz) box chocolate cake mix, 3 eggs, ½ cup vegetable oil, and ¼ cup water. Mix until smooth, following the ingredient amounts listed on your cake mix box if they differ.
  • Lightly coat the inside of the slow cooker with cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.
  • Pour the prepared cake batter into the slow cooker. Spoon the prepared pudding evenly over the batter, then sprinkle 12 oz chocolate chips over the top.
  • Cover and cook on HIGH for about 3 hours.
  • Scoop the warm cake into bowls. The center will be soft and gooey from the pudding layer.
  • Serve with ice cream, whipped cream, hot fudge, or caramel sauce if desired.

Notes

Using a slow cooker liner helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.
The center will be gooey—this is normal and creates the lava-like texture.
Cooking times may vary, so start checking around 2½ hours. If your cake mix box lists different ingredient amounts, follow those instructions.
