Substitutions and Variations
- Dipped in chocolate. Melt chocolate and dip each donut in melted chocolate instead of frosting. Then decorate with orange icing using piping bags.
- Powdered Sugar Donuts. Make Monster Donuts using powdered sugar donuts. This is another option if you do not want to use original glazed donuts.
- Candy melts. Another fun option is to melt different colors of candy melts and drizzle on the Halloween treats. You can also use green icing or purple icing.
- Donut holes for a smaller treat. This recipe can easily be converted using donut holes instead of regular donuts. Just dip the tops of each donut hole as the recipe instructs and decorate the mini donuts as normal.
- Other holidays and occasions. This recipe can easily be adapted for birthday parties, special occasions and other holidays. Simply change the color of the frosting and use sprinkles that coordinate.
- Toppings. Crush cookies and top the donuts with cookie pieces. Halloween M&M candy is another idea for spooky season.
Expert Tips
- Add toppings before the frosting sets. Make sure to add the sprinkles right away. You want to make sure the toppings adhere securely to each donut.
- Dip the donuts to coat. Dip and swirl each donut so that the top is completely covered. The sides don't have to be totally covered but at least a portion of it.
- Alternate colors. If you plan to serve these for a party, it might be fun to do an assortment of colors. You can do some of the donuts in orange, green and black for a festive display.
- Allow to set. Let the frosting and sprinkles set before serving.
