Ingredients

FOR THE CUPCAKES:

  • 2 ½ cups flour all-purpose
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup sugar white granulated
  • 2 eggs room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest finely grated
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 ½ teaspoons orange extract
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk room temperature

FOR THE FROSTING:

  • 1 cup 2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 6-8 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
  • Optional decoration ideas
  • Candied orange slices
  • Orange Jimmies Sprinkles
  • Straws

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line two 12-cup muffin pans with cupcake liners.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Add the orange zest, fresh orange juice, orange extract, and vanilla extract. Mix until well combined.
  • Add the dry ingredients in three additions, alternating with the buttermilk. Mix on low speed just until combined after each addition. Do not overmix. The batter will be fairly thin.
  • Divide the batter evenly among the cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  • Bake for 12–14 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cupcakes cool in the pans for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  • Frosting:
  • Make the frosting: Beat the softened butter until smooth and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
  • Gradually add the powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the milk and clear vanilla extract and beat until light and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk. If it is too thin, add additional powdered sugar until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • Frost the completely cooled cupcakes. Decorate with orange sprinkles, candied orange slices, or straws, if desired.
