Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large mixing bowl, combine 30 ounces pumpkin, 16 ounces evaporated milk, 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice, 1 cup sugar, 4 large eggs, and 2 teaspoons cinnamon. Whisk until smooth and well combined.
Pour the pumpkin mixture evenly into the prepared 9×13-inch baking dish.
Sprinkle 1 package yellow cake mix evenly over the entire pumpkin mixture. Do not stir.
Sprinkle 1 cup chopped pecans evenly over the cake mix.
Cut ¾ cup butter into very thin slices and arrange them evenly over the entire surface of the cake mix and pecans, covering as much of the top as possible.
Bake uncovered for about 60 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the pumpkin layer is set.
Allow the dessert to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm, topped with whipped cream if desired.
