Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spray an 8 inch or 9 inch round pan with non-stick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, mix together the cake mix, water, vegetable oil and 3 large eggs.
Pour half of the batter into the round pan. You can save the remaining batter or make cupcakes or a 2nd cake out of it!
Bake for 22-28 minutes until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Let the cake cool completely at room temperature on a wire rack.
Carefully remove the cake from the pan and level the top of the cake with a serrated knife.
Remove a 1 inch strip out of the center of the cake. To do this, find the center of the cake. Slice the cake approximately 1/2 inch above and below the center of the cake to make 2 semi-circles of the cake.
Place the semicircles of the cake on a serving platter and gently push them together to form a football shape.
Frosting the cake with the chocolate frosting.
Place some of the vanilla frosting in a pastry bag fitting with a round tip.
Pipe the laces and other decorations on top of the cake.
Dye the remaining vanilla frosting green with the food coloring.
Then pipe the green frosting around the outside of the cake with a grass tip to look like grass around the football.
Then the cake is ready to serve and enjoy!
Notes
Store the leftover cake, covered, at room temperature for up to 4-5 days.
