Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Variation Ideas

  • Frosting – We used store bought frosting. But you can easily make your chocolate frosting with cocoa powder.
  • Cake – We used a chocolate cake mix, but feel free to use the cake mix you prefer.
  • Decorate – We decorated with cake as a football, but feel free to add in other decorations or sprinkles.

Step by step instructions

  • Step 1 – Heat Oven – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Then spray an 8 inch or 9-inch round cakes pan with non-stick cooking spray.
Cake batter in mixing bowl.

Step 2. Whisk together the cake mix and water. Add in vegetable oil and 3 large eggs into the mixture.

Cake cooling on wire rack.

Step 3. Pour half of the cake batter into the round cake pan.  You can save the remaining batter or make cupcakes or a 2nd cake out of it. Bake the cake and allow to cool completely.

Step 4. Carefully remove the cake from the pan. Then level the top of the cake with a serrated knife.

Middle strip removed from cake.

Step 5. Make a football shape by removing 1 inch strip of cake out of the center.  To do this, find the center of the cake. Slice the cake approximately ½ inch above. Cut below the center of the cake to make 2 semi-circles of the cake.

Step 6. Place the semicircles of the cake on a serving platter. Then gently push them together to form a football shape.

Cake covered in chocolate frosting.

Step 7. Frost the cake with the chocolate frosting.

White stripes added to football.

Step 8. Place the white frosting in a pastry bag. Use it to pipe the laces on the cake.

Green icing around cake to look like grass.

Step 9. Dye the remaining frosting green with the food coloring. Then pipe the green frosting around the outside of the cake. Use a grass tip so that it looks like a grass football field around the football.

Recipe Tips for Success

  • Leftover batter – You will only use half the batter as you are not making a layer cake. Feel free to use the remaining to make cupcakes.
  • Check Cake – Use toothpick to check and make sure cake is done. Insert in center of cake and if it comes out clean, cake is done cooking.
  • Cake Topping – You want to level the cake by removing the round top. This allows the cake to not have a round top.
  • Making Football Shape – You will be surprised how it is easy to make a football out of a round cake. This saves time and money and always impressive.
  • Piping Bag – We recommend using a piping bag to decorate the cake.
  • 2-inch wide strips – Make a stripe on each end of the cake to start to make the look of the football.
  • Frosting – Frosting the sides of the cake as well as the top of the cake.
