This recipe for Chocolate Crinkle Cookies is one of our favorites to make. It starts with a cake mix and takes only a few ingredients. I like to stock up on cakes mixes during the holidays, so I can make a quick dessert like these easy Chocolate Crinkle Cookies.

This cookie recipe is definitely easy! I have been making these type of cookies for years. The kids also love Funfetti Cake Mix Cookies and Double Chocolate Cake Mix Cookies.

Why we love this recipe

With only 4 ingredients, it is so easy to make in less than 30 minutes. They taste great with lots of chocolate brownie flavor. The cookies take very little time or expense.

Chocolate Cookies are soft and chewy.

Ingredients for recipe - cake mix, powdered sugar, eggs, oil.
  • Chocolate Cake Mix – You can use a Devils Food Chocolate Cake as well for this recipe.
  • Eggs – I find that the eggs mix best in the batter when they’re at room temperature.
  • Vegetable Oil – Canola oil also works great in this recipe.
  • Powdered Sugar

Get the complete instructions and ingredient list at the bottom of the post.

  • Add Chocolate Chips – You can experiment with the cookies and add chocolate chips, white chocolate chips and more.
  • Cream Cheese Frosting – Top the cookies with a cream cheese frosting for added flavor.
  • Double Stuffed Cookies – Make double stuffed cookies by making Vanilla Buttercream Frosting with butter and placing between 2 of these cookies.
  • Powdered Sugar – The confectioners sugar is optional in this recipe. If you leave it out, the cookies will still taste great.
  • Dip Cookies in Chocolate – You can dip half the cookies in melted white chocolate to create a fun variation on this cookie recipe.
  • Change the Cake Mix – I love using a chocolate cake mix for this cookie recipe, but you can easily use your favorite flavor of cake mix: vanilla, strawberry, red velvet and cherry chip would all be delicious.
  • Christmas Cookies – Add some holiday sprinkles to the cookies as soon as your take them out of the oven.
  • Nuts – You can easily add nuts to the cake mixture or add them to the top of the cookie after they are finished baking.
  • Granulated Sugar. Try rolling the cookies in granulated sugar.

Recipe tips

  • Use Cookie Scoop – I highly recommend using a cookie scoop. You will thank me later because it saves so much time on spooning out the cookies.
  • Cooling Rack – It is also a good idea to use a cooling rack. Place the cookies on racks to cool completely.
  • Lined Baking Sheets – We also line baking sheets with parchment paper. This makes cleaning large baking sheets easier as well.
  • Baking Liners – Another handy kitchen item I like to use are these baking liners to bake my cookies. Clean up is easy and the cookies turn out perfectly every time.
  • No Need Chill Dough – Once you have mix together the ingredients, there is no need to chill the dough. You can begin scooping the dough into balls and placing on the baking sheets.
  • Do NOT add any of the other ingredients required for the cake on the back of the box. Just use the dry ingredients only from the boxed cake mix.

How to Store

Store any leftover quick chocolate crinkle cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Also, you can put a piece a bread in the container with the cookies to keep the cookies moist.

How to Freeze

You can also easily freeze these cake mix crinkle cookies. Place them in a freezer bag or freezer container for up to 2-3 months. I like to also cover in plastic wrap.

Let the cookies defrost at room temperature and then they are ready to enjoy.
