What Are Marry Me Cookies?

Marry Me Cookies, officially known as Marry Me Chocolate Chip Cookies, are ultra-soft, rich, bakery-style cookies created by the genius mind of Melissa Stadler and the creative genius behind Modern Honey. This now-famous recipe gained national attention when Melissa’s cookies became the grand prize winner on the Cooking Channel, where the winner received a trip to NYC.

Melissa Stadler developed these cookies to be the ultimate chocolate chip cookie—perfectly chewy, indulgent, and unforgettable. The name “Marry Me Cookies” comes from the idea that they’re so incredibly delicious, they could inspire a marriage proposal after just one bite.

With their soft and chewy centers, slightly crisp edges, rich buttery dough made with brown sugar, and generous chocolate chips, Marry Me Chocolate Chip Cookies have become an internet-famous favorite for holidays, gifting, and special occasions.

Ingredients

Ingredients for marry me cookies - brown sugar, white sugar, eggs, vanilla, flour, oats, baking soda, white chocolate chips, semi sweet chocolate chips.
  • Unsalted butter – softened to create a rich, creamy base
  • Light brown sugar – packed for moisture and deep, caramel-like sweetness
  • Granulated sugar – adds sweetness and helps create crisp edges
  • Large eggs – at room temperature for smooth mixing
  • Pure vanilla extract – enhances and balances the flavors
  • All-purpose flour – provides structure to the cookies
  • Old-fashioned oats – adds texture and a hearty chew
  • Baking soda – helps the cookies rise and spread properly
  • Kosher salt – balances sweetness and boosts overall flavor
  • White chocolate chips – adds creamy sweetness throughout
  • Semisweet chocolate chips – brings rich chocolate flavor and balance

Step By Step Instructions

Butter in saucepan.

Step 1. Start by melting the butter in a medium saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly while scraping the bottom of the pan. Small brown bits will start to form in about 6–8 minutes in the melted butter. Then remove from heat immediately. This will make the most delicious browned butter cookie.

Sugar added to melted butter.

Step 2. Once melted, stir the brown sugar and granulated sugar directly into the warm browned butter until smooth.

Sugar and butter mixture combined.

Step 3. Allow the mixture to chill in the fridge for about 10 minutes. This is an important chilling step. While this chills, preheat the oven to 325°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Egg and vanilla extract added to mixture.

Step 4. Next, remove the cooled butter mixture out of the refrigerator. Add eggs one at a time into the butter-sugar mixture, followed by the teaspoons vanilla extract, mixing until smooth on medium speed.

Dry ingredients added to butter mixture.

Step 5. It is time to add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients – flour, oats, baking soda, and teaspoon salt to the bowl. Mix just until the dough comes together on medium-low speed and no dry flour remains on the bottom of the bowl. You don’t want any unmixed pockets in the dry mixture.

Chocolate chips and white chocolate chips folded into mixture.

Step 6. Carefully fold in the white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips by hand into the cookie dough. Do not use a hand mixer or stand mixer.

Dough balls on baking sheet ready to bake.

Step 7. Form the dough into balls using a 2-tablespoon cookie scoop. Place on the prepared large baking sheets about 2 inches apart. Then lightly press each one down.

Step 8. Finally, bake the browned butter cookies for 11–13 minutes in a preheated oven. The edges should be lightly golden, but the centers still look soft after the baking time. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer using a spatula to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Storage

  • Room temperature: Store in an airtight container or resealable bags for up to 5 days to keep cookies soft and chewy. Place sheets of wax paper in between the cookies so the layers do not stick.
  • Refrigeration: Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days; bring to room temperature before serving.
  • Freezing: Place baked cookies in a freezer-proof container or bag for up to 3 months; thaw at room temperature before enjoying.

Pro Tips

  • Soften butter properly: Ensures a creamy, well-blended dough.
  • Use room temperature eggs: Helps the dough mix evenly for softer cookies.
  • Don’t overmix: Overmixing can make cookies dense; stir until just combined.
  • Even-sized cookies: Use a cookie scoop for uniform baking.
  • Add extras: Try nuts, toffee bits, or dried fruit for a fun twist.
  • Chill the dough: Helps cookies hold their shape and prevents spreading.
  • Keep cookies soft: Store with a slice of bread in an airtight container to maintain moisture.

Instructions

  • Add the butter to a medium saucepan and cook over medium-low heat. As it melts, the butter will begin to foam and sizzle. Stir constantly, scraping the bottom of the pan, until small brown bits form. This should take about 6–8 minutes. Remove from heat immediately.
  • Stir the brown sugar and granulated sugar directly into the warm browned butter until smooth and fully combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to the refrigerator and chill for about 10 minutes to cool slightly.
  • While the mixture chills, preheat the oven to 325°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  • Remove the cooled butter mixture from the refrigerator. Stir in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract, mixing until smooth.
  • Add the flour, oats, baking soda, and salt to the bowl. Mix just until the dough comes together and no dry flour remains.
  • Gently stir in the white chocolate chips and semi-sweet chocolate chips by hand until evenly distributed.
  • Scoop the dough using a 2-tablespoon cookie scoop and place onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between each cookie. Lightly press each one down.
  • Bake for 11–13 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden but the centers still look soft. Avoid over baking for the best texture.
  • Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Recipe Notes

Store any leftover cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days. I recommend keeping a slice of bread in the container with the cookies to keep them soft.
Make sure to use old-fashioned rolled oats, not quick oats.
Make sure not to over mix the batter when stirring in the flour and oats. Mix until the batter is just combined.
