Ingredients

  • Golden Delicious Apples. Peeled and Chopped
  • Ground Cinnamon. You can adjust this to taste.
  • Lemon Juice. I love to use fresh.
  • Brown Sugar. Try this Homemade Brown Sugar Recipe.
  • Old Fashioned Oats. Make sure to use old fashioned and not quick cooking oats.
  • Flour. I suggest spooning the flour into a measuring cup instead of scooping it. This will make it easier to measure.
  • Butter. Diced into small pieces.

Additions

  • Nuts. Try adding walnuts or pecans to the topping.

Pro Tips

  • Use Real Butter – Make sure to use real butter. It delivers a rich and the topping just tastes better. Also, resist the urge to add more butter. Too much butter in the topping can result in it being very greasy.
  • Do not use melted butter – I have tried it both ways and I feel like using cold butter works better when mixing up the apple crisp topping.
  • Use Unsalted Butter – Normally when baking, you will make sure not to use salted butter. Keep unsalted butter in the fridge for any baking needs.
  • Try different Apples – We used Golden delicious apples but if you prefer a tart apple, try using Granny Smith apples. Both are delicious and you can use the type you prefer.
  • You do not have to peel the apples – I prefer to peel the apples for most of my apple dessert recipes, but you don’t have to. They are still

Storage

You can store the leftovers for easy future desserts. Allow the apple crisp to come to room temperature. Then store in an air-tight container in a refrigerator.

You can also cover with aluminum foil. It will stay fresh for up to 5 days. You can microwave or heat in the oven when reheating.

Can You Freeze This Recipe?

You can freeze an apple crisp that’s already been baked. First, allow it to cool completely to room temperature. Then cover tightly with plastic wrap and foil. You can freeze for up to 3 months.

When ready to bake, thaw in the refrigerator and then bake in 350F oven until completely warmed through.

This is great to do when you are making it for a party or a holiday.

You can do all the work ahead of time and freeze. Then just throw the apple crisp in the oven on the day of the party or holiday.
