Crostata means fruit tart and typically it is open faced or with a lattice top. Crostata is a Italian term for rustic tart. I have always thought tarts looked so fancy but they are simple to make.

You will love this crostata recipe. It is made with simple ingredients and wrapped in a crust and delicious with caramel sauce.

What is the Difference between a Crostata and a Pie?

The main difference of a crostata and a pie is how it is baked. A pie is baked in a pie shell giving the pie structure. A crostata is baked on a baking sheet.

How to Make Apple Crostata

Step 1. First, make the crust. It is very simple. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt.

Step 2. Place into a food processor.

Step 3. Next, cut butter into the flour mixture until well combined. It will mix into large crumbles using a pastry blender, fork or food processor. We prefer to use a food processor, but you can use what you have or prefer.

Step 4. Add ice water a little at time until dough is moistened and comes together in a ball. Roll dough on floured surface with rolling pin to about 12 inches round.

Step 5. In a large bowl, add sliced apples.

Step 6. Sprinkle with sugar and flour and toss to coat.

Can Apple Crostata be made ahead of time?

If you prefer to make your apple crostata ahead of time, you can with these easy recommendations.

Simple prepare the pie crust and apple filling and keep them separate. Then on baking day, roll the dough and place the filling into the dough. Then fold the edges around the dough and bake.

How to store?

Apple Crostata can be stored at room temperature covered in plastic wrap. This Apple crostata will last about 4 to 5 days.

Can you Freeze a Crostata?

This apple crostata can easily be frozen unbaked or baked. If freezing unbaked or baked place the prepared crostata on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and place in the freeze. Allow it to freeze solid and then store in a freezer bag.

When you are ready to enjoy, thaw the baked crostata and then reheat. If the crostata has not been baked then you can cook the crostata even if frozen. It may just take longer to cook.

  • Crust:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup 1 stick unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • 2 tablespoons ice water
  • Filling:
  • 4 cups 4 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced or chopped
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons apple pie spice **see notes
  • Serving:
  • Caramel – homemade or store bought optional
  • Vanilla Ice Cream optional


  • Crust:
  • Preheat oven at 375 degrees F
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt
  • Cut butter into flour mixture until well combined into large crumbles using a pastry blender, fork or food processor

  • Form into ball and flatten to round disk
  • Roll dough on floured surface with rolling pin to about 12 inches round

  • Pile apples in the center of the crust
  • Fold edges of dough over apple mixture, crimping the edges slightly

Apple Pie Spice – you can substitute 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg and ¼ teaspoon allspice.
