The main difference of a crostata and a pie is how it is baked. A pie is baked in a pie shell giving the pie structure. A crostata is baked on a baking sheet.

How to Make Apple Crostata

Step 1. First, make the crust. It is very simple. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, sugar and salt.

Step 2. Place into a food processor.

Step 3. Next, cut butter into the flour mixture until well combined. It will mix into large crumbles using a pastry blender, fork or food processor. We prefer to use a food processor, but you can use what you have or prefer.

Step 4. Add ice water a little at time until dough is moistened and comes together in a ball. Roll dough on floured surface with rolling pin to about 12 inches round.

Step 5. In a large bowl, add sliced apples.

Step 6. Sprinkle with sugar and flour and toss to coat.

Step 7. Sprinkle with apple pie spice and toss to coat.

Step 8. Pile the apples in the center of the crust.

Step 9. Fold edges of pie crust dough over apple mixture, crimping the edges slightly,

Step 10. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
