  • Mini Marshmallows. You can also use regular size marshmallows but I prefer mini.
  • Green Gel Food Coloring. Make sure to use gel food coloring.

Find the complete ingredient list at the bottom of the page.

How to Christmas Tree Rice Krispie Treats

  • Step 1 – First, spray a baking sheet with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Step 2 – Next, add the butter and marshmallows to a microwave safe bowl.  Melt butter in 30 second intervals.
Mixing bowl with melted marshmallows with green food coloring.

Step 3 – Add the green gel food coloring to this mixture. You can adjust the amount until it’s a vibrant green color.  Stir with a spatula.

Cereal added to green mixture.

Step 4. Once the mixture is melted, add in the rice cereal.

Cereal mixture pressed into pan and topped with sprinkles.

Step 5. Spread evenly into the prepared pan. Add the Christmas sprinkles.

Shapes cut into trees and pretzels added.

Step 6. Allow to cool by sitting at room temperature in the baking dish. Finally, cut the mixture into approximately 40 even triangles. Then carefully press a pretzel sticks into the bottom of the triangle to form the tree trunk.

Pro Tips

  • Cutting Bars – Allow holiday treat to set for at least an hour before cutting. This allows for the rice krispie to cool and set.
  • Baking Pan Size – We used a cookie sheet to press the rice krispie mixture in. We think the thinner the rice krispie treats are the better they are to cut into trees.
  • Combine Ingredients – Combine the ingredients until just combined. Overmixing will result in the texture being hard.
  • Pressing mixture into pan – Don’t pack the mixture into the pan. Firmly compacting the ingredients will make the bars lose their softness. This can be avoided by simply not pressing firmly into the pan.

How to Cut Rice Krispie treats neatly?

They are easiest to cut when taken entirely out of the pan. Place the entire sheet of rice krispies on a cutting board. It makes it even easier when you line your pan with parchment paper.

Then use a really sharp knife to cut them into individual slices. It is also helpful to spray the knife with non stick cooking spray. Make sure to wipe it clean to ensure there isn’t any build up.

Another option is to use a pizza cutter to cut the rice krispie treats. Spray the pizza cutter and cut into bars.

Either of these options should ensure the rice krispies look great.

How to Decorate

  • Sprinkles – You can use any type of sprinkles to decorate your Christmas Tree. We used red and green but you can use any color.
  • Gel Icing – These Christmas Trees Rice Krispie would be fun to add some think gel icing. This will make it look like there is garland on your tree.
  • Green Food Coloring – You can use any color of food coloring or you can leave them plain.
  • Different Shapes – We cut out the trees shapes into triangles, but you can easily use different shapes of cookie cutters.
  • Powdered Sugar – Dust the trees with powdered sugar to make it look like snow.

Storage

Store any leftover Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Do not store these treats in the refrigerator. They are best left to cool at room temperature so that they remain gooey and delicious.

We do not recommend freezing these crispy treats. Freezing them will change the texture of the treat.
