Any of these would be delicious. You can even combine some of these. I think peanut butter and chocolate would be yummy.
  • Nuts. Add about ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the cake batter. This is one of my favorite add ins.
  • Cake mix. Devil’s food cake mix would be a delicious substitution or any type of chocolate cake mix.

FAQs

How to store leftovers?

Place leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days. Either place the cake inside a container with an airtight lid or use the slow cooker and add the lid.

It should not be left at room temperature and needs to be kept in the refrigerator.

How to reheat lava cake?

Reheat in the microwave until heated through and the center is warm. The lava topping should be gooey and fudgy.

The gooey texture is so good with ice cream.

Can you eat chocolate lava cake cold?

You can but I don’t recommend it. This recipe is intended to be served warm and the middle ooey gooey.

It just isn’t the same cold. I would definitely heat up leftovers so that it can be enjoyed warm for the best dessert.

Can you freeze the cake?

Yes. leftovers can be frozen up to 3 months in the freezer. Just make sure to put the cake inside an airtight container or freezer bag.

Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave when ready to enjoy.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t mix the layers before baking. You want the cake layer to be separate from the chocolate lava topping. It is really important that you do not mix these together.
  • Slow cookers can vary so it is a good idea to keep an eye on the cake. You don’t want to overbake it because it will not be fudgy and gooey. Keep an eye on the edges as it cooks.
  • Keep the lid on. Don’t continuously open the lid because it will allow heat to escape. This in turn prevents the cake from cooking evenly.
