Variation ideas

  • Substitute the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips, white chocolate chips, butterscotch, semi sweet chocolate chips or dark chocolate.

Any of these would be delicious. You can even combine some of these. I think peanut butter and chocolate would be yummy.
  • Nuts. Add about ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts to the cake batter. This is one of my favorite add ins.
  • Cake mix. Devil’s food cake mix would be a delicious substitution or any type of chocolate cake mix.
  • Gluten free. You can substitute a gluten free cake mix in this recipe.

How to make Slow cooker chocolate lava cake

Mixing bowl with cake mix.

Step 1. First, get out a large bowl. Combine the chocolate cake mix, oil, eggs, and milk and beat with an electric mixer until the batter is smooth. Don’t over mix the batter.

Step 2. Next, spray the slow cooker with cooking spray so the cake won’t stick. Then pour the cake batter into the slow cooker. Use a spatula to smooth over the bottom as evenly as possible.

Pudding mixture spread over top of batter.

Step 3. Get out another bowl. Mix together the milk and pudding mix. Pour this pudding mixture over the top. Do not stir.

Step 4. Finally, sprinkle chocolate chips over the top without stirring. You want each of these layers to be separate.

Step 5. Cover and cook on high for 3 to 4 hours. The top should be set but still slightly wiggly.

Step 6. Serve warm and enjoy. I like to serve it with ice cream.

  • No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream. Top the warm cake with ice cream. It will melt into the cake for a decadent treat. Other flavors to try include: chocolate for even more chocolate flavor, Fudge royal, Caramel and more.
  • Whipped Cream. Put a dollop of whipped cream on top of the cake. This is so amazing.
  • Chocolate Sauce. Drizzle chocolate on top for even more chocolate flavor.
  • Caramel Sauce. Add a little caramel to make this even more delicious. I think it would be yummy to combine chocolate and caramel sauce on top.

How to store leftovers?

Place leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days. Either place the cake inside a container with an airtight lid or use the slow cooker and add the lid.

It should not be left at room temperature and needs to be kept in the refrigerator.

How to reheat lava cake?

Reheat in the microwave until heated through and the center is warm. The lava topping should be gooey and fudgy.

The gooey texture is so good with ice cream.

Can you eat chocolate lava cake cold?

You can but I don’t recommend it. This recipe is intended to be served warm and the middle ooey gooey.

It just isn’t the same cold. I would definitely heat up leftovers so that it can be enjoyed warm for the best dessert.

Can you freeze the cake?

Yes. leftovers can be frozen up to 3 months in the freezer. Just make sure to put the cake inside an airtight container or freezer bag.

Allow to thaw overnight in the fridge. Reheat in the microwave when ready to enjoy.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t mix the layers before baking. You want the cake layer to be separate from the chocolate lava topping. It is really important that you do not mix these together.
  • Slow cookers can vary so it is a good idea to keep an eye on the cake. You don’t want to overbake it because it will not be fudgy and gooey. Keep an eye on the edges as it cooks.
  • Keep the lid on. Don’t continuously open the lid because it will allow heat to escape. This in turn prevents the cake from cooking evenly.
