It is a dessert similar to cobbler but with a cake topping. Dump Cake uses dry cake mix and normally some type of fruit.
The name originates from the method of which the ingredients are tossed into the dish. You do not need much time to prepare this type of dessert as everything is toss and go.

Step 2. Spread the pineapple in the pan. Pour both cans of the crushed pineapple into the baking pan.ย Spread it out as evenly as possible.ย

Serving Suggestions
- Whipped Cream. Top each serving with a dollop of Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe.
- Ice Cream. Add a scoop of No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream to each slice.
- Cherries. The kids like when I top the slices with maraschino cherries. You can also place these on the cake as well. It looks so pretty!
Storage
Refrigerate the leftover dump pineapple cake and cover it up to 5 days. If you have a baking dish with a lid, this is ideal. If not, use plastic wrap and then aluminum foil to ensure freshness.
Reheat the leftovers in the microwave. We like the cake served warm but you can also just serve it room temperature. This easy pineapple dump cake is delicious either way.
Can you Freeze Leftovers?
If you can’t eat the cake within 5 days, you can freeze it. Wrap the cake in plastic wrap and then place inside an airtight container up to 3 months. Thaw the cake overnight in the fridge when ready to enjoy.
I prefer to freeze the cake in individual slices. It makes it easier to just take out of the freezer the portion you want. This is so handy when the craving strikes for something sweet
You can reheat in the microwave or the oven. If using the oven, I suggest covering in aluminum foil to prevent the top from getting to brown while it thaws.
Pro Tips
- Do not mix together any of the ingredients in the pan. Layer the ingredients and then bake.
- Don’t drain the pineapple juice. The cake needs this so it isn’t dry.
- The instructions on the cake mix don’t matter. Follow the dump cake recipe instructions instead.
- Don’t worry if you can’t find crushed pineapple or only have other varieties in the pantry. Just use what you have and place into a blender until it is the desired texture.
Variations
- Nuts. You can add chopped nuts to this recipe as well. Add them with the brown sugar on top of the crushed pineapple.
I love adding chopped pecans but walnuts are good too. The nuts can be added into the cake before baking or as a topping later. - Cake Mix. We used yellow cake mix but feel free to swap out for what you have. White cake mix is great too. For even more pineapple flavor, use pineapple cake mix.
- Pie Filling. This is a great base recipe to experiment with other types of fruit. Some ideas include: cherry pie filling, blueberry pie filling and strawberry pie filling. Oh and we also like apple pie filling for a delicious cobbler dessert.
- Pineapple. You can try using one can pineapple tidbits and one can crushed pineapple for a different texture. This recipe is very versatile and easy to use what you have on hand.
