Variation Ideas
- Use different flavor of cake mix – Try yellow cake mix instead of white cake mix. Chocolate cake is also tasty. We have tried lemon cake mix and it turned out so good. You can squeeze lemon juice on the cake mix.
- Try other Pie Fillings – Use other pie fruit fillings such as apple, blackberry, strawberry, blueberry, blackberries, raspberries and cherry pie filling. Mixed Berry is also delicious.
- Adding in Nuts is a family favorite – Add nuts to the mix before baking for even more flavor!
- Fresh Pineapple – Mixing in some fresh pineapples adds a tropical flavor to this blueberry dump cake.
- Shredded Coconut – If you are a fan of coconut, add some to the mix.
- Topping. Sprinkle fresh berries or frozen blueberries on top of the cake mix before baking.
Step by Step Instructions
- Step 1 – Prepare Oven – Preheat oven to 350°F.

Step 3. Top with Cake Mix Layer – Sprinkle the cake mix over the top, being careful to cover all of the pie filling.

Step 4 – Add the Slice Butter Layer – Slice the butter into thin slices (about 16) and spread them out evenly over the top of the cake mixture.

Recipe Tips
- Butter – We recommend using cold butter. Slice butter thinly onto the layered cake mix. Make sure to cover the entire cake with the butter slices. When the butter begins to melt, the cake mix begins to cook to create an amazing crust.
- Sugar – When making this cake, there is no need to add any additional sugar. If you want it sweeter, you can add a little to the top of the blueberry pie filling.
- Blueberries – You can use fresh blueberries if you prefer. You will probably need about 4 cups of fresh blueberries. If you do use frozen, rinse and drain before adding to the baking dish.
Topping Ideas
- Ice cream – Vanilla is delicious but feel free to try different ice cream flavors.
- Whipped cream – You can also make Homemade Whipped Cream.
- Caramel or Chocolate sauce. Drizzle all over the top. It is so good.
- Top with nuts – Chopped pecans or walnuts are great.
- We have also made a crumble topping with brown sugar, chopped pecans and butter to put on top. This is totally optional but really delicious if you have a few extra minutes.
