Why We Love These Brownies

These salted caramel brownies are completely made from scratch including the salted caramel sauce. We love that the brownies are loaded with caramel baked into the brownies and more on top!

We recommend not skipping on this step as this ooey gooey caramel sauce really gives it so much flavor. The texture is so moist and delicious.

Ingredients

Brownies

  • Sugar and Brown Sugar. The combination of both types of sugar result in a delicious brownie.
  • Cocoa Powder. Make sure to use unsweetened cocoa powder.
  • All Purpose Flour. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup instead of scooping it. This will help you not to pack too much flour into it.
  • Large Eggs. Room temperature eggs.
  • Butter. Melted unsalted butter.
  • Vanilla Extract. Pure vanilla extract will have the best results.
  • Chocolate Chips. Use a good quality chocolate such as ghirardelli. You will taste the difference.
  • Caramel Candies. Unwrapped

Caramel Sauce

  • Caramel Candies. You can use your favorite brand.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream. Don’t substitute this with a different type of milk.
  • Sea Salt. Helps to cut down on the sweetness and gives it the best taste. I like Maldon sea salt.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Gluten FreeIf you prefer the recipe to be gluten free, you can substitute the flour for gluten free flour. It is a 1:1 substitute for the flour.
  • Nuts – Top the brownies with a few tablespoons nuts to add additional crunch.
  • Chocolate Chips – Add mini chocolate chips to the salted caramel brownie recipe for added flavor.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Prepare Oven and Baking Pan – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8X8 baking pan with parchment paper or foil (line the sides as well).
  • Mix Ingredients – In a large bowl, whisk the butter, eggs,  sugar and vanilla extract until they are well combined.
  • Add in dry ingredients – Slowly stir in the cocoa powder, flour, salt and baking powder.  In the bowl combine ingredients in by hand and be careful not to over mix these ingredients.
  • Mix in Chocolate Chips – Then fold in the ½ cup of chocolate chips.
  • Pour Brownie into Pan – Spread the brownie batter into the baking dish.
  • Add Caramel Layer – Gently press the 50 caramel candies gently into the top of the brownie batter. Once baked, this will create a swirl of caramel in each bite!
  • Bake Brownies – Bake for 32-37 minutes until a toothpick insert into the brownies comes out clean. Bake time may vary.
  • Check to see if brownie done. – Make sure you insert the toothpick into the brown part and not the caramel part of the brownies.
  • Cool Brownies – Allow for the brownies to cool on a wire rack. While the brownies are cooling, prepare the caramel mixture.
  • Melt Caramel Candies – Heat 10 store-bought caramels in a saucepan or pot with the heavy cream in a microwave safe dish.
  • Stir until melted – I like to heat in 30 second intervals and stir in between each interval. You will need to heat until the caramels are melted and a rich amber color.
  • Drizzle and top with flaky sea salt – Drizzle the caramel sauce over the brownies and then sprinkle with the ½ teaspoon salt.
  • Serve and Enjoy – Cut and enjoy.

Storage

If you have leftover Caramel Brownies, just cover and store in the fridge or on the counter is fine. If you put them in the fridge, they will need to come to room temperature or be reheated a few seconds.

I think they taste better warm or room temperature.

Pro Tips

  • Line Baking Pan – I also like to use parchment paper when I bake. It helps make clean up easy and you can remove the brownies from the pan for easy cutting.
  • Mixing Brownie – Don’t over mix the brownie batter. Just mix until the brownie mix is combined.
  • Baking Brownies – Be careful to not over bake the brownies. This will make them lose their delicious fudgy consistency.
  • Ingredients – When we are mixing the ingredients, it is best if the eggs and butter are at room temperature. The ingredients mix together easily.
  • Chocolate. I like to use semi-sweet chocolate chips, so the brownies aren’t overly sweet with the caramel.

Serving Suggestions

When we make brownies they are best served warm. The caramel sauce on the warm brownie makes the best combination.

We also love to serve with a scoop of ice cream. You can even make Homemade Ice Cream with easy ingredients. This no churn ice cream is easy to make.

How to Cut Brownies?

  • Cool Brownies Completely – The brownies need to cool completely before slicing them.
  • Sharp Knife – Begin cutting the brownie, cleaning the knife with each slice. We like to cut into medium size squares.
  • Serve with a Spatula – Use a spatula to scoop out brownie and serve.

What kind of Carmel candies did you use? Can you substitute with Carmel chips? Or salted Carmel chips?
