Fritters are deep fried cakes with fruit mixed in. Apple Fritters have fresh apples, cinnamon, vanilla and more in the dough.

Ingredients

Ingredients for apple fritters recipe - flour, cinnamon, milk, melted butter, vanilla, granny smith, vegetable oil, powdered sugar.

Fritters

  • All Purpose Flour. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup instead of scooping. This is more accurate.
  • Ground Cinnamon. Feel free to add a little extra cinnamon if you love cinnamon.
  • Milk. Whole milk is best.
  • Melted Butter. This needs to be cooled before using.
  • Vanilla Extract. I suggest pure vanilla extract.
  • Granny Smith Apples. Peeled and diced. You can also use Golden Delicious if you want a less tart apple.
  • Vegetable Oil. For frying.

Glaze

  • Confectioners Sugar. If it is lumpy, you can sift it before using.
  • Milk. Whole milk will give the glaze a richer taste.

Step 4. Heat the oil and fry the dough using a dutch oven. It will take about 2-3 minutes on each side. Remove from oil and allow to cool on cooling rack. Then top with glaze.

How to Make Apple Fritter Glaze

  • Step 1. Combine the glaze ingredients. Next, mix together the glaze ingredients in a bowl with a whisk.
  • Step 2. Dip the fritters. Dip the fritters in the glaze to cover them with the glaze and place them on a wire rack to dry. You can also pour the glaze over them.
  • Step 3. Serve and enjoy. Then the fritters are ready to serve and enjoy!

Storage

These fritters are best served the day that they are made. However, you can store the leftovers at room temperature for up to 1 week.  Then, just place them inside an airtight container.

I would use parchment paper to separate the layers. This prevents them from sticking and also helps to absorb the grease.

Expert Tips

  • Do not overmix. Be careful not to over mix the batter or the fritters could be tough.
  • Fry in batches. You will likely need to fry the fritters in batches depending on the size of your pan.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan. The oil temperature is hard to maintain when too much dough is placed in the pan.
  • Drain on paper towels. Allow the fritters to drain on paper towels once taken out of the oil. This will allow excess grease to be absorbed into the paper towels while cooling.

What Type of Apple is Best For Frying?

Granny Smith apples are the best apples for frying. They hold up well to the heat during the cooking process. This type of apple is firm and ideal for cooking.

You can also use golden delicious, gala, fuji or honeycrisp apples.

Serving Suggestions

They are also delicious with a hot cup of coffee or iced coffee.
