Ingredients

Ingredients for Broken Jello - jello packets, boiling water, unflavored gelatin, hot water and sweetened condensed milk.
  • Jello: Use four small boxes of jello in any combination you like. Bright colors work best! Pineapple, cherry or strawberry, orange, and lime are great choices.
  • Boiling Water: Needed to dissolve the flavored packet of jello completely for those vibrant, colorful cubes.
  • Unflavored Gelatin: Helps set the creamy base that holds all the colorful Jello pieces in place.
  • Hot Water: Used to dissolve the unflavored gelatin before combining it with the milk.
  • Sweetened Condensed Milk: Adds rich, creamy sweetness to the base and contrasts beautifully with the fruity Jello cubes.

Expert Tips

  • Follow the recipe, not the box: Prepare the Jello using the recipeโ€™s specific instructions to ensure the right texture and flavor balance.
  • Use shallow containers: Setting the Jello in shallow dishes helps it firm up faster and makes cutting easier.
  • Cut gently: Use a sharp knife and handle the Jello cubes carefully to keep them intact and visually appealing.
  • Cool the gelatin mixture: Always let the condensed milk and gelatin mixture cool before pouring it over the cubes to prevent melting.
  • Chill thoroughly: Allow plenty of time for the dessert to set fully in the refrigerator for the best texture.
  • Serve cold: Broken glass Jello is best enjoyed chilled, so keep it refrigerated until ready to serve.

Instructions

  • Prepare each flavor of jello with 1 cup of boiling water per flavor in a separate container. Each container should be shallow and about 1 inch deep.
  • Place in the refrigerator until the Jello solidifies. This will take 3-4 hours.
  • Once solid, cut each flavor of jello into small square cubes.
  • Place the Jello cubes into the 9X13 baking dish. Mix the cubes together so the same flavors are not altogether. Spread into an even layer and be careful that you don’t break the Jello cubes.
  • Dissolve the 2 unflavored gelatin packets in 2 cups of hot water in a mixing. Allow to cool 1-2 minutes and then stir in the sweetened condensed milk.
  • Allow the mixture to cool to the touch so that it does not melt the jello. Once cool, pour the mixture over the jello cubes in the 9×13 pan.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
