What Is A Buckeye Pie?

Buckeye pie has all the flavors of classic Buckeye Balls. While this will not taste the same as the classic Buckeye Candy, it will be so tasty and provide a new twist.

The Crushed Oreo Crust is topped with a creamy peanut butter filling similar to the inside of buckeye candy. Then the pie is covered with a rich chocolate topping.

We like to leave a portion of the peanut butter filling showing. This will make the pie most closely resemble traditional buckeye candy.

Ingredients

Ingredients for buckeye pie recipe

Crust

  • Oreo Cookies: Whole Oreos (with cream filling) crushed into fine crumbs to create a rich, chocolatey base.
  • Unsalted Butter, melted: Binds the cookie crumbs together and adds a touch of richness without extra salt.

Pie Filling

  • Cream Cheese: Softened at room temperature for a smooth, creamy texture.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter: Adds rich, nutty flavor and pairs perfectly with the cream cheese.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sweetens and thickens the filling for the perfect consistency.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the flavor and adds a subtle, aromatic touch.

Topping

  • Milk Chocolate Chips: Use good-quality milk chocolate for a smooth, creamy, and sweet ganache.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream: Adds richness and helps create a silky, pourable chocolate topping.

Variations

  • Crust. We love the Oreo cookie crust but feel free to try other variations. More tasty ideas include chocolate graham crackers or a store bought crust.
  • Topping. Sprinkle crushed candy, sprinkles, nuts or anything you like on top of the chocolate. Just make sure to do this before the chocolate sets so that it will stick.

How To Make Buckeye Pie

Buckeye Pie-low res-3

Step 1 – Crush the Oreo cookies in a food processor. Or place them in a Ziplock bag and bash with a rolling pin until crumbs are formed.

Step 2 – Mix the crushed cookies with melted butter. Press into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate. I like to use the bottom of a glass cup for this.

Step 6 – Spoon the chocolate into the center of the pie and carefully smooth it out into a circle in the middle of the pie.  Then refrigerate for at least 6 hours.

Recipe Tips

  • Pouring the Chocolate – Leave a visible border when pouring in the chocolate ganache. This gives it the traditional buckeye look.
  • Cream Cheese – Make sure to use full fat cream cheese. This recipe does not turn out the same with reduced fat.
  • Soft Ingredients – Allow ingredients to soften to avoid lumps in your pie filling. It will blend together much easier.
  • Peanut Butter – We recommend using regular peanut butter in this recipe. Natural peanut butter does not mix as well.
  • Melting Chocolate – Microwave the chocolate topping in intervals. You do not want to risk burning the chocolate.
  • Chill Pie – The pie needs to be refrigerated for at least 6 hours but overnight is best before cutting. Attempting to cut this too soon will result in difficulty slicing and they won’t look clean cut.
  • Before Serving – Allow the pie to come to room temperature for 15 minutes before slicing. This will make it easier to cut through the ganache.
  • Crushing Cookies – If you do not have a food processor, crush the cookies inside a ziplock bag. You can use the back of a spoon or rolling pin to crush the cookies. Just make sure the bag is sealed properly.
  • Quality Chocolate – Try to use good quality chocolate for making the topping. The results will turn out much better. You can taste the difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Store Leftovers?

Cover the pie in plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 5 days. If you have a pie storage container, this is another great way to keep the pie fresh in the fridge

Can I Make Ahead of Time?

Yes, this is the perfect pie to prepare ahead of time. Since it needs time to chill, I like to prepare the night before serving.

Can I freeze this pie?

For longer storage, you can freeze the dessert. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in a freezer-safe container. It will last for 1–2 months. Thaw in the refrigerator for several hours or overnight before serving.

Refrigerate leftovers, covered for up to 5 days.
Make sure to use full fat cream cheese and that it has softened to avoid lumps in your pie filling.
Do not use all natural peanut butter for this recipe as it could separate and not mix well with the other ingredients in this recipe.

I made this for our Family Thanksgiving dessert. It was delicious and well received. However, it’s entirely too rich. People are slivers of the pie and even that was too much. I think adding either a whipped cream to fold the mix into… or rice krispies to make it airy and crunchy, would really help.

    1. Kathy - Eating on a Dime Team says:

Hey Bess – So glad you tried it and thanks for taking the time to leave feedback. It is definitely a rich dessert!
