Why we love this recipe

With only a few simple ingredients, this is such an easy pie to make. However, the results are so decadent. You don’t have to heat up the oven and it’s so indulgent.

It does not call for meringue so no need to even use a saucepan. This easy to make recipe uses whipped cream! Since this is a no bake recipe, you don’t have to worry about using large eggs, cornstarch or more.

Variations

  • Nuts. Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the top when you add the caramel drizzle. It all combines with the caramel filling for a delicious pie.
  • Sea salt. Sprinkle a little sea salt on top of each slice of pie when serving. It is optional but so tasty.
  • Homemade whipped cream. You can substitute store bought for homemade using heavy whipping cream. It is easy to mix together until stiff peaks form.
  • Pie crust. Try other flavors such as shortbread or chocolate. Another idea is to crush golden oreo cookies to make a crust. There are lots of great flavor ideas.
  • Chocolate drizzle. If you love the combination of caramel and chocolate, try adding chocolate drizzle to the top of the pie before serving. It is even more decadent.
  • Mini pie crusts. You can use the mini graham cracker pie crusts instead of one large pie for the filling. This would be something different and fun for parties when you want ready to go individual servings.

How to make Salted Caramel Pie

Cream cheese and sugar in a mixing bowl.

Step 1. First, get out a large bowl. Then use a handheld mixer to whisk together the cream cheese and powdered sugar (not granulated sugar).

Caramel sauce added to bowl.

Step 2. Add the salted caramel sauce and vanilla extract. Combine using medium speed. This mixture should be creamy and smooth.

Whipped topping added to bowl and combined.

Step 3. Next, add in half of the whipped topping.  Do not use the electric mixer for this part. Gently fold it in by hand.

Mixture spread into pie crust.

Step 4. Once combined, pour the mixture into the pie crust in the pie pan. Then, refrigerate the pie for at least 1 hour before serving. This will give the pie time to set.

Whipped topping spread on pie.

Step 5. Top with remaining cool whip.

Caramel sauce drizzled on top.

Step 6. Drizzle with caramel sauce.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to serve?

Top each slice of caramel custard with the remaining whipped topping.  Then drizzle with a few teaspoons per slice of remaining salted caramel sauce. You can also add a few tablespoons chocolate chips.

How to store?

Store the prepared pie in the refrigerator up to 5 days. Make sure it is covered with plastic wrap, parchment paper or aluminum foil. Then place inside an airtight container.

Can you freeze this pie?

I do not recommend freezing caramel pie. The texture changes once frozen and thawed. It is best eaten fresh.

Can I use a homemade crust for this recipe?

Yes, you certainly can. We just used store bought to save time.

However, it is also very simple to make a homemade crust. Feel free to make one if you prefer.

It is easy to make with melted butter and graham cracker crumbs. Just press the crumbs into a pie dish or plate. You will need a pie dish if using a homemade crust.

Pro Tips

  • Use a thick caramel sauce. The ones in the jars are best. You don’t want to use the caramel in squeeze bottles. It will not be thick enough for the desired consistency.
  • Don’t use reduced fat cream cheese. This recipe is best with full fat cream cheese and not a light version. Also, the blocks are recommended and not the tubs of cream cheese or the whipped variety. Full fat blocks of cream cheese result in the best pie filling.

  1. Carol Anderson says:

I have not made this yet. Was wondering what size pie crust you use for this since they come in 9 inch and 10 inch sizes?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I used a 9 inch crust for this recipe but since this is a no bake pie recipe, either will work great.
