You will love how quick and easy it is but it’s tasty enough for any occasion.

Variation Ideas

  • Change the Cake – Try yellow cake mix instead of devil’s food cake mix. There are lots of boxed cake mix options. White Cake mix is another good substitute.
  • Change the Pie Filling – Use other pie fillings such as apple pie filling, blackberry, strawberry, blueberry and more.
  • Chocolate Chips – Add chocolate chips to the cake mix for more of a rich and decadent flavor.
  • Top with Cherries – Use maraschino cherries in the baking mix or even on top.
  • Change the Pan – Instead of a 9×13 pan, use a Bundt pan or jelly roll pan for something different.

How to Make Chocolate Cherry Cake

Step 1. Add cake mix to large mixing bowl. Then add remaining ingredients.

Step 2. Whisk all of the ingredients together with a mixer. Stir until combined and pour into the prepared pan. The recipe is best using a 9×13 inch pan.

Step 3. Bake the cake in a preheated oven. You should be able to insert a toothpick in the middle and it come out clean. When finished baking cool completely on a wire rack.

Step 4. Frost with your favorite frosting, Homemade Whipped Cream Recipe, or serve with your favorite ice cream.

How to Serve Chocolate Cherry Cake

  • Serve with Ice Cream – We love to serve this cake warm with a scoop of No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream. Drizzle with chocolate ganache with a cherry on top. There is just something so delicious about cold ice cream seeping into the hot cake and mixing with the cherry pie filling.
  • Frosting – Frost the cake with your favorite frosting. You can make a Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe, Salted Caramel Cream Cheese Frosting or you can use a store-bought frosting. Chocolate Frosting is also great with this cake.
  • Whipped Cream – Whip cream is also another tasty option. I have even used both ice cream and whipped cream.
  • Powdered Sugar – Dust the top of the chocolate with powdered sugar before serving.

I have made this cake for many years, the original recipe that I followed called for topping it with chocolate pudding. It makes it such a decadent dessert and we always use a dollop of whipped cream on top.
