Variations and Substitutions
- Beach theme. Use golden Oreos so the dirt cake looks like sand. Top with little tropical umbrellas for a festive summer dessert.
- Chocolate Pudding. Use Chocolate Pudding instead of vanilla for even more chocolate flavor in Oreo dirt pudding.
- Fun toppings. Kids will love gummy worms and fake flowers on top. You can also sprinkle chocolate chips on the cool whip.
- Serving dish. Instead of a traditional baking dish, make this inside a sand bucket or flower pot. Use the shovel as the serving spoon.
- Individual servings. Use small clear cups to make dirt pudding cups. Layer each cup just as the recipe directs for the individual cups.
- Try different flavors of Oreo cookies. Some tasty ideas include Red Velvet, peanut butter, mint, Golden Oreo, and more.
How to make Dirt Cake Without Cream Cheese
- Step 1. First, prepare the Oreo cookies. Use a food processor to crush the cookies into fine crumbs.

Step 2. Then put 2/3 of the crushed Oreos in the bottom of a baking dish. This recipe is perfect for a 9×13 pan.

Step 3. Then use a large bowl to mix together the pudding mix and cold milk.

Step 4. Once combined, fold in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Add half of the whipped topping and stir in the pudding mixture. Make sure it is combined really well.

Step 5. Next, pour this pudding mixture all over the Oreo crumb mixture in the baking dish.

Step 6. Finally, top everything with the remaining cool whip and crushed cookie crumbs.

Step 7. Serve and enjoy.

- The dirt cake needs to set for at least 4 hours in the fridge before serving. Don’t rush this step or the texture will not be the desired consistency.
FAQs
This dessert needs to be refrigerated and will last up to 3 days. It can get pretty soggy so I don’t suggest any longer.
We eat this pretty fast so it isn’t an issue around here. Make sure to cover the dish properly.
I use one of the pans that has a lid. If your baking dish does not, use plastic wrap to cover the pan tightly.
Yes, you can easily make this in advance. I recommend up to 24 hours in advance.
Typically, I make this the night before I plan to serve it. It has enough time to set and saves time the day I need it.
If you need to make this 48 hours in advance, that is fine. However, wait to add the top layer of oreo cookies until ready to serve. They will get too soggy otherwise.
Make sure to cover the dish with plastic wrap or a lid. This will prevent the pudding from developing a layer on top.
Food Processor. The quickest and easiest way is to use a food processor. Just toss them in and the food processor does all the work. It is very easy to get the cookies super fine.
Rolling pin. If you do not have a food processor, you can use a rolling pin. Place the cookies in a ziplock bag and make sure to seal tightly. Use a rolling pin to crush the cookies into crumbs.
While these are the most common methods, you can also use a blender. It works very similar to a food processor. Just toss and pulse until the cookies are fine crumbs.
If you have young children helping, you can give them a wooden spoon and let them use the back of that to crush the cookies.
