Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe - oreo cookies, cream cheese, powdered sugar, cool whip, pudding, easter candy.
  • Oreos – Use regular Oreo cookies, not double-stuffed, for the best texture.
  • Cream Cheese – Softened to room temperature so it blends smoothly.
  • Powdered Sugar – Sift if it’s lumpy to ensure a smooth, creamy filling.
  • Cool Whip – Full-fat Cool Whip gives the best flavor and creaminess.
  • Instant Vanilla Pudding – Use instant pudding mix; do not use the cook-and-serve type.
  • Easter Candy – Add Peeps, Robin’s egg candies, and sprinkles for a festive touch. You can also use gummy worms, pastel M&Ms, or any candy you love.

The complete ingredient list is included in the recipe card at the bottom.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Candy Mix-Ins: Swap classic candy eggs for jelly beans, pastel M&Ms, or chocolate bunnies for a colorful twist.
  • Pudding Flavors: Try chocolate, vanilla, or even strawberry pudding for a fun flavor change.
  • Cookie Base: Use chocolate wafer cookies, graham crackers, or gluten-free cookies instead of Oreos.

FAQs

How do you crush Oreos for dirt cake?

You can crush the Oreo cookies in a food processor.  Don’t worry if you don’t have one. Just place them in a Ziploc bag, seal and crush with a rolling pin.

How to store?

Cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate. It will keep up to 3 days in the fridge. Just keep in mind that the candy might become soggy. You can always remove the peeps before storing.

Can you freeze this recipe?

While the recipe can be frozen, the texture does change once thawed. Due to this, I do not recommend freezing dirt cake.

Pro Tips

  • Coconut “Grass” Topping: Dye shredded coconut with green food coloring in a small bowl and sprinkle over the top to resemble grass. You can also mix in a few edible flowers or pastel sprinkles for extra festivity.
  • Use Instant Pudding: Always use instant pudding for this recipe. Cook-and-serve varieties will not set properly and can make the dessert too runny.
  • Whole Milk for Creaminess: Whole milk creates the creamiest, richest filling. Avoid reduced fat or skim milk, as it can affect texture.
  • Cream Cheese at Room Temperature: Softened cream cheese blends more easily with the pudding and whipped cream, preventing lumps.
  • Cool Whip: Full-fat Cool Whip provides the best stability and flavor. Light versions may be less stable and softer.
  • Oreos: Regular Oreo cookies work best. Double-stuffed Oreos may make the layers too sweet and soft. Crush them gently for an even texture.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sift to remove lumps so the filling stays smooth and creamy.
  • Easter Candy Variations: Customize the candy topping! Peeps, Robin’s eggs, gummy worms, pastel M&Ms, or even mini chocolate bunnies all work.
  • Make Ahead: While this dessert is best served the same day, you can assemble it a few hours ahead and refrigerate. Add the toppings right before serving for freshness.

  1. Arlene says:

Can you make this Oreo dump cake a day ahead?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, this can be made the day before serving. I hope you enjoy the recipe.

  2. Jaime says:

This is probably so late, I don’t know when this was published but it looks AMAZING! I want to make this for Easter but am wondering how the oreo stays together as a crust without mixing it with melted butter? I feel like when you scoop it into your mouth it’ll just be crumbs everywhere! What is your magic?! 🤣

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Hey Jaime – When serving this cake, the mixture is softer like a pudding instead of sturdy like a cake. However, most of the toppings soak into the Oreo crumbs and seals it to the bottom of the cake. I hope you try it out and let me know what you think! My entire family loves this!
