I love this super moist Cola Chocolate Cake and wanted to try this new recipe using Dr. Pepper soda. Everyone went crazy over it and absolutely loved the flavor. It’s such a moist cake and perfect with the chocolate frosting.

  • chocolate cake mix
  • stick of butter
  • Dr pepper
  • milk
  • large eggs

Icing

  • stick of butter
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • dr pepper
  • powdered sugar – sifted

How to make Dr. Pepper Cake

  • Step 1. First, preheat the oven to 350 f degrees. While the oven is preheating, spray a 9×3 pan with cooking spray.

Step 2. While the oven preheats, prepare the cake mix in a bowl with the Dr. Pepper, butter, milk and eggs. Whisk until thoroughly mixed together. You can also use an electric mixer.

Step 3. Next, pour the cake batter mixture into your pan. Bake for about 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Step 4. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Then add the cocoa powder and soda. Mix everything together and bring to a boil.

Step 5. As soon as it starts to boil. remove from the heat. Keep stirring constantly. Then add the powdered sugar until the icing starts to get thick. Let it cool a little bit and then pour frosting on top of the cake.

Storage

Cover in plastic wrap. Then refrigerate up to 4 days.

Pro Tips

  • Make sure you have a 9 x 13 baking dish for the cake.  I also love the cake pans with the lid if you are taking this dessert somewhere. It helps prevent spills. It is also great for storing leftovers.
  • Try using disposable pans if you are taking this dessert to someone and don’t want to have to worry about getting the pan back. I often make this recipe for people or events because it is so easy and budget-friendly to make.
  • Don’t overmix the batter. Stir until just combined.

Can you freeze this cake?

Yes, wrap in plastic wrap. Then place it inside a freezer container or bag. Freeze for up to 3 months.

  • For cake:
  • 1 chocolate cake mix
  • 1 stick of butter melted
  • 1 cup Dr pepper
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • for icing:
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Lightly grease a 9×13 pan.
  • Mix the cake mix, cola, butter, milk and eggs until thoroughly mixed.
  • Once completely mixed, Pour into the pan.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes.
  • Meanwhile make the icing:
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter.
  • Mix in the cocoa power and cola. Bring just to a boil.
  • Remove from the heat and stir constantly.
  • Mix in the powdered sugar until a the icing thickens. Allow it to cool slightly.
  • Pour on top of the cake.
  • Let the cake cool completely before serving.
