Variations and Substitutions

  • Cream Cheese. Follow the same directions but add an 8 oz package of cream cheese on top of the pie filling before you add the cake mix. Just cut in slices and put all over the pie filling.
  • Dry Cake Mix. I think lemon would be yummy. You could also try strawberry cake mix or chocolate cake mix to make a Chocolate Strawberry Dump Cake.
  • Fruit filling. You can substitute other types of pie filling. Try cherry, apple, blueberry, peaches, blackberries, raspberries, or anything you like.

How to make a strawberry dump cake

  • Step 1. First, go ahead and preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then get your baking pan ready. We use a 9×13 pan and it works perfectly. Just make sure to spray with cooking spray.

Step 5. Finally, melt the butter and drizzle all over the cake mix. Try to get this mixture as evenly as possible.

Step 6. Next, bake until the top is golden brown. This normally takes about 45 minutes, but oven times will vary. I recommend checking on the cake once you get to the 40-minute mark.

Expert Tips

  • Cover the cake evenly in butter. It needs to cover the cake as evenly as possible when pouring the butter.
  • Make in advance. The cake is very quick and easy. However, you can make this a day in advance if needed and reheat.
  • Cool slightly before serving. The cake is great served warm but should cool a little before serving.
  • Cut strawberries into thin slices. You do not want them too thick.
