Substitutions and Additions
- Cookie Dough. We used store bought cookie dough but feel free to make homemade Sugar Cookies Recipe or your favorite cookie recipe. You can also use a mix such as Betty Crocker and add extracts like almond extract or clear vanilla extract.
- M&M’s. We used holiday colors but feel free to use any color you prefer. If you are making these in January, blue would be pretty.
- Icing – You can use decorative icing such as royal icing recipe to decorate them instead of candy if you prefer. The icing is fun to use food coloring and make the face, scarf and buttons. It is handy to have a few disposable piping bags on hand so you can pipe the icing. Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting is another option and you can use food coloring in gel colors.
- Chocolate – While m&m’s are fun, any similar sized candy will work. While it won’t be as colorful, you could use chocolate chips for the buttons as well.
- Sprinkles – Feel free to add sprinkles or any type of decorations you like. Orange sprinkles would be cute for the nose.
- Arms – Use pretzel sticks for arms if you want to add those. It is optional but such a fun little extra touch to the cookies.
- Melted Snowman. Add large marshmallows on top to resemble Melted Snowman Cookies Recipe
How to Make Snowman Cookies

Step 1. First, put the store bought cookie dough on a lined baking sheet while you preheat the oven. You want to put 3 cookies together so they bake into a snowman shape.

Step 2. They should be about ½ inch apart and I use large baking sheets. I always use parchment paper to line the cookie sheet. This helps make clean-up easier.

Step 3. Bake the cookies per the directions on the package until lightly browned. They will turn out light and fluffy.

Step 4. After they bake, remove the cookies from the oven. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a cooling rack and start to decorate.

Step 5. Finally, decorate the cookies. Do this while they are still warm so it sticks. Place the chocolate chips and m&m’s on the cookies to form the snowman face and buttons.

Step 6. Then add the frosting gel around the top and middle cookies for a scarf. We used red and green but you can use any color of icing you prefer. Serve in a platter or bowl.
