Why We Love This

It is so convenient to make when you need dessert in smaller quantities. Anyone can easily whip this up in minutes. The cake batter is super easy with only a few pantry staples.

Each bite is packed with all the flavor of hot cocoa for the perfect treat. It’s really rich and delicious. You can easily satisfy your craving without turning on the oven and it tastes great.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Mug Cake - flour, hot cocoa mix, salt, milk, chocolate chips, mini marshmallows.
  • All Purpose Flour. Just plain flour is needed and not self-rising flour.
  • Hot Cocoa Mix. Use any brand you love of hot chocolate.
  • Salt. Just a pinch of salt will enhance the flavor of the cake and balance out the sweetness.
  • Milk. Feel free to use what you have on hand.
  • Chocolate Chips. This is optional but adds so much flavor.
  • Mini Marshmallows. For serving and completes the dessert.

Substitutions and Additions

  • Chocolate. You can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate or even white chocolate.
  • Hot Cocoa. I like Swiss Miss but you can use any brand of hot chocolate mix you love.
  • Sugar. If you are out of granulated sugar, substitute with brown sugar.
  • Oil. Substitute melted butter if you don’t have oil. You can also swap the vegetable oil for coconut oil.

Step By Step Instructions

Cake ingredients combined together in a mug.

Step 1. Get out a microwave safe 12 oz mug. Add the flour, hot cocoa mix, sugar, baking powder and salt to the large coffee mug. Then stir in the milk, vegetable oil and vanilla. Make sure all the ingredients are well combined.

Step 2. Next, carefully stir in the chocolate chips if using. Then microwave the mixture for 60-90 seconds. The cake should be set but the center still a little jiggly. Make sure to check the cake after 90 seconds by inserting a toothpick into the center of the cake. Don’t insert into the melted chocolate chip. If the toothpick does not come out clean, cook for 10-15 second intervals until done.

Step 4. It’s delicious served warm and you can also add Hot Fudge Sauce or chocolate sauce. Top with sprinkles if desired.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overcook the mug cake. Stop cooking the cake earlier than you think as the mug cake will continue cooking as it sets. Microwave times vary so keep an eye on it.
  • Make sure the mug is large enough. It needs to be 12 ounces to hold all of the ingredients. It will expand so you need plenty of room. Also, make sure you are using a microwave-safe mug.
  • Measure accurately. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup instead of scooping it. This is more accurate and will prevent using too much flour.
  • Thin the batter. If it seems too thick, you can add a little more milk. Start with a teaspoon at a time until the desired consistency.
