Step by Step Instructions

Lining the baking sheet with parchment paper and cooking spray

Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 Fahrenheit. Line a jelly roll pan with foil or parchment paper. Spray with a non-stick cooking spray. Don’t skip this step so it will be easy to remove from the pan.

Layering the pretzels on a baking sheet

Step 2 – Spread the pretzels out onto the baking sheet in a single layer.

Meting two sticks of butter in the sauce pan

Step 3 – In a saucepan, melt the butter over low-medium heat.

Mixing in the brown sugar with the melted butter

Step 4 – Add brown sugar once butter is completely melted and stir to combine. Bring the butter and brown sugar to a boil and continue boiling for 2-3 minutes until the mixture has thickened.

Pouring the butter and brown sugar mixture over the pretzels in the baking sheet

Step 5 – Immediately remove from heat and pour bubbly mixture over the pretzels making sure to cover all the pretzels. Place in oven and Bake for 5-8 minutes, or just until the edges of brown sugar mixture gets bubbly. Cooking time will vary.

Topping the pretzel mixture with chocolate chips

Step 6 – Remove the pan from the oven and immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the pretzels.

Spreading the melted chocolate over the pretzel mixture with a spatula

Step 7 – Allow the pretzels to sit for 5 minutes to melt the chocolate. Then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate over the pretzel layer.

Top the chocolate pretzels with nuts and sea salt while in the baking sheet

Step 8 – Top with the chopped walnuts and sea salt. Place the pan in the refrigerator to allow the toffee to harden and cool completely. Then remove the toffee from the pan and break it apart into pieces with your hands.

Recipe Tips

  • Line the baking pan. The mixture is sticky. Line the pan with foil or wax paper and spray with cooking spray.
  • Sprinkle the chocolate immediately. As soon as you take the pan out of the oven, top with the chocolate so it will melt.
  • Add toppings right away. If you add toppings, make sure to add them before the chocolate sets. Otherwise, it will not stick to the chocolate.

More Topping Ideas

  • Sprinkles. Coordinate to holidays, birthdays and celebrations.
  • Nuts. We used chopped walnuts but pecans and peanuts taste great too. Alternatively, you can omit the nuts if desired.
  • Chopped Candy. Some ideas include heath bars, butterfinger, snickers and more.
  • Crushed Graham Crackers. You can use plain, cinnamon or chocolate graham crackers.
  • Toasted Coconut. This looks so pretty and will be a hit with coconut fans.

Storage

Store the leftover toffee in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.  Don’t leave it at room temperature.
