Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe: Ritz crackers, chocolate, butter, sprinkles, brown sugar.
  • Ritz crackers: Use fresh crackers for the best crisp texture and balanced salty flavor.
  • Butter: Real butter is key for a rich, buttery toffee base.
  • Brown sugar: Pack it firmly for accurate measurement; it creates the caramel-like toffee layer.
  • Chocolate chips: Choose semi-sweet, milk, or dark chocolate depending on your sweetness preference.
  • Sprinkles: Optional, but perfect for adding color and a festive touch for any occasion.

Variations

  • Nuts. Sprinkle chopped nuts on top of the chocolate. We like pecans, almonds, or walnuts.
  • Chocolate. Try using white chocolate or dark chocolate. Another tasty idea is to top with chocolate and then drizzle white chocolate on top.
  • Candy. Crush peppermints, heath bars, or butterfingers on top.
  • Sea Salt. Top with a little bit of sea salt.
  • Crackers. Substitute saltine crackers instead of Ritz.
  • Seasonal. This is so pretty to make for all the holidays and seasons. Try using candy corn for Halloween, pastel M&M’s for Easter, heart sprinkles for Valentine’s Day.

  • Preheat the oven. It needs to be set to 350 F. Then line a jelly roll pan with foil and spray with a non-stick cooking spray.

Pro Tips

  • Arrange crackers tightly: Place the crackers side by side so they touch. This prevents the caramel from seeping through and helps the toffee hold together.
  • Cook the caramel properly: Boil the butter and brown sugar mixture long enough for it to thicken and become bubbly. Undercooking will result in soft toffee that won’t set.
  • Line your pan: Use aluminum foil or parchment paper to line the baking sheet for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Spread quickly: Once the caramel is ready, pour and spread it over the crackers right away before it starts to set.
  • Melt chocolate evenly: After baking, sprinkle chocolate chips on top and let them sit for a few minutes to soften before spreading into a smooth layer.
  • Use quality chocolate: Higher-quality chocolate melts better and gives a smoother, richer finish.
  • Cool completely: Allow the toffee to set fully at room temperature or in the fridge before breaking into pieces for clean edges.
  • Add toppings while warm: Sprinkle sea salt, nuts, or sprinkles while the chocolate is still soft so they stick well.
  • Don’t overbake: Keep an eye on the caramel layer in the oven to avoid burning.
  • Break into pieces: Once set, break into rustic pieces or cut with a sharp knife for cleaner squares.
  • Store properly: Keep in an airtight container to maintain crunch and freshness.
