How to Freeze Fudge

  • Step 1. Cut into individual slices – Our freezer is not big enough to hold a large pan of fudge. Cutting into individual slices or larger blocks allows it to defrost faster and to only thaw out a smaller portion.
  • Step 2. Wrap Individual Slices – Place individual slices on a piece of plastic wrap and wrap. Then wrap again with aluminum foil. I like double wrapping to ensure no freezer burns and keep the air out.
  • Step 3. Freezer Bag – Place individual slices in a freezer bag or freezer air-tight container. Make sure to squeeze out all air to keep the chocolate fudge sealed tightly. You can also separate the fudge with parchment paper.
  • Step 4. Label – We like to label when we place the fudge in the freezer. This makes sure that we eat it in a timely manner and that we know exactly what is in the freezer bag.
  • Step 5. Place in Freezer – We like to lay the freezer flat in the freezer. This keeps the fudge shape and safe from other freezer items during long term storage.

How to Thaw Frozen Fudge

Thawing frozen fudge the right way is just as important as making sure you freeze it properly.

  • Step 1. Refrigerator Space – When you are ready to thaw your fudge, make sure you have placed the fudge in your fridge. You don’t want to thaw on the counter, cupboard or pantry.
  • Step 2. Thawing Fudge – To keep the consistency of the leftover fudge, you want to make sure that you give time for the fudge to thaw. It will need about 2 hours of thawing time before you are ready to serve.
  • Step 3. Ready to Serve – Once we are ready to serve, remove the freezer bag of fudge from the refrigerator. Remove the foil and plastic from the fudge and place on the cookie tray. The fudge should taste and have the consistency as if you just made it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Store Fudge in the Freezer?

When we have prepared the fudge by double wrapping and placing in the freezer bag, then we place in the freezer. We like to lay the fudge flat in the freezer and after about 12 hours, you can place other items on the fudge.

How Long Does Fudge Last in the Freezer?

If stored properly, the shelf life of fudge is about 3 months in the freezer.

Why is my Fudge Dried Out?

Make sure to have all the ingredients ready to make the fudge mixture. If the fudge sets out too long, it can dry out and lose its moisture. When not serving, make sure you place it in the freezer or store it at room temperature in an airtight container to prevent exposure and preserve taste.

Can you Freeze Homemade Fudge?

Yes, you can freeze homemade fudge. When we prepare fudge and after it has cooled, we like to slice the layer into individual servings. This allows for the fudge to properly be wrapped in saran wrap and then foil and placed in a freezer safe bag.

If the fudge is stored as individual slices, it is easy to pull just a small portion when you are ready to serve. If fudge is stored properly then it will last up to 3 months.

Fudge can also be stored at room temperature, and it will last about 2 to 3 weeks. Store properly it will taste just like fresh fudge.

Can you freeze fudge with nuts?

Yes, but I prefer to stir the nuts into the fudge mixture if freezing. Nuts sprinkled on top may fall off during the freezing process.
