Liners in pan with a marble.

Step 2. While the oven is warming up, prepare the pan. Line the muffin tin with liners and place a marble or foil ball the size of a marble in each muffin cup. Place it between the cupcake liner and the pan to make the liner indent look like a heart shape.

Step 8. Finally, place the homemade buttercream frosting in a decorating bag with a plain tip.  Then pipe the pink frosting onto the cooled cupcakes.  If you do not want this extra step, just spread the frosting on with a knife.

Sprinkles added to cupcakes.

Step 9. Finally, add sprinkles to the tops of cupcakes.

How to store

Store the leftover cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. However, I find that the cupcakes are the best within 3 to 4 days of baking.

Topping ideas

  • Instead of sprinkles, use icing to write words on the cupcakes. Some ideas include: Love, XOXO, Be Mine and more.
  • Crushed candy, mini marshmallows and nuts all make great toppings.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t put too much batter in the cupcake liners. If you overfill them, they will not look like hearts once baked in the muffin pan.
  • If you are having trouble getting the marble to stay in place, try filling with batter first and then placing the marble.
  • Any type of liner will work. However, foil liners are sturdier than a paper baking cup and make it easier to form that point in the middle.
  • Don’t have any marbles? Make small balls out of aluminum foil and use those instead.
  • Cake Mix. Substitute red velvet cake to make red velvet cupcakes. You can also use vanilla cupcakes for the perfect Valentine’s Day treat.
