How to make heart cupcakes
For the Cupcakes:
- Step 1. First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Step 2. While the oven is warming up, prepare the pan. Line the muffin tin with liners and place a marble or foil ball the size of a marble in each muffin cup. Place it between the cupcake liner and the pan to make the liner indent look like a heart shape.

Step 3. Next, mix together the Devil’s Food Cake Mix based on the instructions on the box. Fill each cupcake liner with the cupcake batter.

Step 4. Then bake the cupcakes for 14 to 15 minutes. You want a toothpick inserted into the center to come out clean. Allow to cool.

Step 5. While the cupcakes cool, make the frosting. Add the butter and vegetable shortening and cream until smooth. You can use a stand mixer or a handheld mixer to do this.

Step 6. Then beat in the powdered sugar gradually. Make sure to add this gradually on low speed.

Step 7. Next, stir in vanilla and milk. Combine this until it is mixed thoroughly and light and fluffy. Once combined, add the pink coloring until you get the shade of pink you like.

Step 8. Finally, place the homemade buttercream frosting in a decorating bag with a plain tip. Then pipe the pink frosting onto the cooled cupcakes. If you do not want this extra step, just spread the frosting on with a knife.

Step 9. Finally, add sprinkles to the tops of cupcakes.
How to store
Store the leftover cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. However, I find that the cupcakes are the best within 3 to 4 days of baking.

Topping ideas
- Instead of sprinkles, use icing to write words on the cupcakes. Some ideas include: Love, XOXO, Be Mine and more.
- Crushed candy, mini marshmallows and nuts all make great toppings.
- You can use different types of frosting. Chocolate icing would be yumny and you can top with pink and red sprinkles.
- Swap the frosting and try Peanut Butter Frosting Recipe or Salted Caramel Frosting.
Expert Tips
- Don’t put too much batter in the cupcake liners. If you overfill them, they will not look like hearts once baked in the muffin pan.
- If you are having trouble getting the marble to stay in place, try filling with batter first and then placing the marble.
- Any type of liner will work. However, foil liners are sturdier than a paper baking cup and make it easier to form that point in the middle.
- Don’t have any marbles? Make small balls out of aluminum foil and use those instead.
- Cake Mix. Substitute red velvet cake to make red velvet cupcakes. You can also use vanilla cupcakes for the perfect Valentine’s Day treat.
