Ingredients

Ingredients for recipe - rice krispie cereal, butter, marshmallows,, peanut butter, chocolate chips.
  • Rice Krispie Cereal. Make sure it is fresh and not stale.
  • Butter. This helps to combine the marshmallows, and we recommend real butter.
  • Marshmallows. Mini marshmallows are easiest to melt.
  • Creamy Peanut Butter. You can use any brand you love but I do suggest creamy and not crunchy.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips. I like semi-sweet because it cuts down on sweetness but you can also use milk chocolate chips.

Storage

Store any leftover Rice Krispie treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Do not refrigerate the rice krispie treats or they will harden and not be as soft. They also will not be ooey gooey.

Pro Tips

  • Thinner Treats – You can make half of this batch for thinner rice krispie treats. We love thick rice krispie treats but you make what you prefer!
  • Do not store in the refrigerator. They are best left to cool at room temperature so that the remain gooey and delicious.
  • Don’t skip the parchment paper. This helps with cleanup and makes it so easy. To easily lift treats out of the pan, use parchment paper.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients – When making these treats always use fresh marshmallows and cereal. The treats will taste better and last a lot longer.
  • Vanilla Extract – Adding vanilla extract adds so much flavor to these treats
  • Gently Press into Pan – Make sure to use your hands or spatula to press into pan so the treats remain soft.

FAQs

What are my Rice Krispie treats falling apart?

The most common cause is using too many marshmallows. This will cause them to be soft and fall apart.

Resist the urge to add extra marshmallows because the results will not be the same. We recommend following the recipe as listed. This ensure that your adding the right amount of marshmallows and cereal.

Another culprit is too much cereal that causes the mixture to be dry. This will make the recipe crumble and fall apart.

How long do they last?

If you store the rice krispie treats in a container , they will last about 3-4 days. Ours never last that long though because we eat them so fast. Also, use wax paper in between the treats to keep them from sticking.

Can you freeze rice krispy treats?

I do not recommend freezing this recipe. It will change the texture of the final product and cause it to harden.

Are Rice Krispie treats gluten free?

These Rice Krispie treats are not gluten free. Rice Krispie Cereal contains malt flavor according to their ingredients. Malt flavor contains barley, which is part of a grain which contains gluten.

However, you can purchase crispy rice cereal that is gluten free.
