How To Make Funnel Cake Fries

Dry ingredients in a bowl.

Step 1. Mix together the dry ingredients. In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder and salt and sugar.

Wet ingredients in a mixing bowl.

Step 2. Combine the wet ingredients. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk the wet ingredients: milk and 2 large eggs. You can also add a teaspoon of vanilla extract if desired. Combine until there aren’t any lumps.

Wet and dry ingredients combined into a bowl.

Step 3. Gradually mix the dry ingredients and wet ingredients. Then place the funnel cake batter in a piping bag or squeeze bottle for piping.  Pipe into hot oil in the dutch oven for 60 seconds on each side. You can use vegetable oil or canola oil. If you have a candy thermometer, try using that to ensure the oil is hot.

Serving Suggetions

I normally put a variety of dipping sauces in ramekins. Everyone can choose their favorites and it is a fun snack or dessert.

These fries are perfect to serve with dipping sauces.

Pro Tips

  • Test the Oil Temperature: Sprinkle a small pinch of flour into the oil. If it sizzles immediately, the oil is hot enough for frying.
  • Adjust Batter Consistency: If the batter is too thick to mix smoothly, add water gradually (1 tablespoon at a time) until it comes together easily.
  • Alternative Batter: Pancake mix can be used in place of all-purpose flour for a quick and simple version.
  • Piping Bag Hack: When using a piping bag, place it upside down in a cup to prevent batter from dripping out before you’re ready to pipe.
  • Fry in Small Batches: Avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain crispiness and even cooking.
  • Drain Excess Oil: Place cooked fries on a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil and keep them crispy.
  • Serve Immediately: Funnel Cake Fries are best enjoyed warm, fresh out of the oil, for the perfect texture and flavor.
  • Topping Ideas: Beyond powdered sugar, try cinnamon sugar, chocolate drizzle, caramel sauce, or sprinkles for extra fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to store leftovers?

Store inside an airtight container in the fridge. You might want to use wax paper in between the layers of funnel cake fries. This will help to absorb any excess grease as they are stored.

How long will they last?

Refrigerate up to 3 days. When ready to reheat, bake at 450 for 3 minutes. While they are definitely best fresh, this method of reheating works well.

Can you make these in the air fryer?

I don’t recommend cooking this in the air fryer. The batter consistency is very wet and will not hold its shape in the basket.

The process can be very messy due to this.
However, you can use the air fryer to reheat the funnel cake fries. Simply reheat with the air fryer at 400 degrees for 3 to 4 minutes until crispy.

While, it is not recommended to cook these in the air fryer, reheating is a great option.

Instructions

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, combine the wet ingredients: milk and 2 large eggs.
  • Slow stir the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and stir until the mixture is smooth. Then place the batter in a bag or bottle for piping.
  • Heat up vegetable oil in a saucepan. You will want to line the bottom of the pan with approximately 2″ of oil. Heat on medium heat until the oil is hot (2-4 minutes).
  • Then pipe the batter in long straight lines (approximately 2-3 inches long) into the oil.  Make sure not to overcrowd the fries in the oil when frying.  You will likely need to cook in batches depending on the size of your pan.
  • Then fry each side for about 60 seconds until golden brown.
  • Then move the fries from the oil to a plate lined with a paper plate to soak up the excess oil.  Dust the fries with the powdered sugar.
  • Then serve with your favorite dipping sauces and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

Make sure to test the oil by sprinkling a small amount of flour into the oil and if the oil sizzles then it’s hot enough and ready to use to make the funnel fries.
I love serving these fries with marshmallow fluff, chocolate sauce or caramel sauce.
If the batter is too thick to fully stir together, then gradually add water (1 Tbsp at a time) until it’s about to mix together.
