Why We Love This Recipe
Perfect Fall Treat: Combines crisp, fresh apples with rich, buttery caramel for classic autumn flavor.
Fun to Make: Easy to dip and decorate, making it a great activity for kids and families.
Customizable: Roll in nuts, sprinkles, or drizzle with chocolate for extra flair.
Great for Parties: Makes a festive centerpiece for Halloween, fall gatherings, or school events.
Gift-Friendly: Individually wrapped, they make charming homemade gifts.

Ingredients
- Apples. The tart flavor of Granny Smith is perfect with the sweetness of the caramel.
- Sticks. Make sure they are sturdy enough to support the apples.
- Heavy Cream. This is the base for the caramel and provides a rich texture.
- Corn Syrup. You need this to make the caramel stick to the apples. If you omit the light corn syrup, the caramel will fall off the apples.
- Butter. Always use real butter.
- Vanilla Extract. Pure vanilla is recommended.
- Toppings of Your Choice. We love nuts (peanuts, pecans, walnuts), sprinkles, Oreos, graham crackers, coconut, candy coating (Reese Cups, mini M&M, butterfingers), pretzels and more.

Variations
- Nutty Delight: Roll the caramel-coated apples in chopped pecans, walnuts, or peanuts for added crunch.
- Chocolate Drizzle: Drizzle melted chocolate (milk, dark, or white) over the caramel for extra sweetness and visual appeal.
- Candy Coating: Roll in crushed candies, sprinkles, or toffee bits for a festive look.
- Salted Caramel: Sprinkle a pinch of sea salt over the caramel before it sets for a sweet-and-salty twist.
- Mini Apples: Use smaller apples for bite-sized treats, perfect for parties or gift bags.
- Flavor-Infused Caramel: Add vanilla, cinnamon, or bourbon to the caramel for a unique twist.
Step By Step Instructions
- Step 1. Start by heating water in a pot until hot. You do not want it boiling. Then add the white vinegar to the hot water.

Step 2. Next, place a stick into the stem end of each apple. Remove any wax on the apples by dipping in water. Swirl to melt and remove any wax. Wipe with towel to dry and remove any remaining wax. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.

Step 3. Get out a saucepan. Add the heavy cream, corn syrup, butter and sugar and stir with wooden spoon. Heat the mixture until it reaches 245 degrees Fahrenheit using a candy thermometer. This is firm ball stage. Remove from heat and carefully stir in the remaining cream and the vanilla.

Step 4. Dip the apples into the caramel. Twirl so the entire apple is coated.

Step 5. Allow the excess caramel to drip off.
- Step 6. If you are using toppings, roll the dipped apple in the toppings before the caramel sets.
- Step 7. Finally, place apples on the lined baking sheet. Refrigerate for 15 minutes to set. Then serve.

Storage
Room Temperature: Store individually wrapped caramel apples in a cool, dry place for up to 3–4 days.
Refrigerator: Keep in the fridge for up to 1 week. Let them sit at room temperature for 15–20 minutes before eating to soften the caramel slightly.
Freezer: Freezing is not recommended, as the caramel can become hard and separate from the apple.
Pro Tips
- Let the caramel set first. If you plan to drizzle melted chocolate or other toppings, allow the caramel to firm up slightly so it doesn’t run.
- Prepare the apples properly. Wash thoroughly and remove any wax coating to ensure the caramel adheres well.
- Use a candy thermometer. Check the temperature of the caramel carefully; reaching the right temperature is crucial for a smooth, perfect coating.
- Heavy cream is essential. It gives the caramel its creamy texture. Don’t substitute with milk or half-and-half.
- Monitor the caramel closely. Caramel can burn quickly, so stay attentive while cooking.
- Add toppings while the caramel is soft. Sprinkle nuts, candies, or cookies before the caramel fully sets so they stick properly.
- Chill slightly for extra firmness. After dipping, you can place the apples in the fridge for a few minutes to help the caramel set faster.
- Use sticks securely. Insert sticks into apples before dipping, and make sure they are stable to avoid spills or accidents.
