Ingredients

Ingredients for Salted Caramel Apple Pie - pie crust, salted caramel sauce, granny smith apples, lemon juice, flour, cinnamon, eggs, sugar.
  • Premade Pie Crusts: Using a store-bought crust saves time, but you can also make a simple 3 Ingredient Pie Crust Recipe for a homemade touch.
  • Salted Caramel Sauce: You’ll divide the sauce between the filling and as a drizzle on top for maximum flavor.
  • Granny Smith Apples: Peel and slice the apples thinly for even baking and the perfect tender texture.
  • Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice is best. It enhances the flavor of the apples and prevents browning.
  • All-Purpose Flour: Spoon the flour into your measuring cup rather than scooping to avoid packing it, which keeps the filling light.
  • Cinnamon: Adjust to your taste and add more if you love a stronger cinnamon flavor.

Topping

  • Large Egg: Lightly beaten, this is used to brush over the crust for a beautiful golden-brown finish.
  • Sugar: Sprinkled on top of the crust before baking, granulated sugar adds a subtle sweetness and a slight crunch.

Variations

  • Top Crust Options: Instead of a traditional lattice, roll out the top crust and cut out shapes for a decorative, elegant alternative. You can also do a full solid top with slits to vent steam.
  • Make It Your Own: Mix in different apple varieties for varied sweetness and texture or add a handful of chopped nuts for crunch.
  • Presentation Tip: Drizzle extra salted caramel over slices before serving for a decadent finish.

How To Make Caramel Apple Pie

  • Step 1. Preheat the oven. It should be set to 400 degrees. Make sure to chill the pie crust while you prepare the filling.

Step 5. Put the pie dough in the 9-inch pie plate. Then pour the apple mixture filling. Drizzle the top of the apples with ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce.

Pie dough cut into pieces to make lattice.

Step 6. Make the lattice top crust. Lay out the other pie crust on a floured work surface. You can use a rolling pin to smooth it out if you need to. I used a pizza cutter to cut the pie crust into 16 strips.

Step 7. Then carefully thread the strips over and under each other to make a weave topping over the caramel apple pie filling.

Step 8. Trim off any excess that hangs over the pie. Then crimp the edges of the dough with a fork.

Step 9. Gently brush the top of the lattice with the lightly beaten egg wash and sprinkle the sugar on top. Cover the crust with aluminum foil or a pie crust shield. Bake the pie at 400 degrees for 30 minutes and remove the foil and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees.  Then bake the pie for 30 more minutes.

  • Step 10. Let the pie cool. Place the pie on a wire rack at room temperature for at least 4 hours.  Drizzle the remaining salted caramel sauce on the pie when serving and enjoy! You can also sprinkle sea salt on top.

FAQs

How to slice?

The pie needs to cool completely before slicing. It really needs to set in order for it to be pretty when sliced. Otherwise, it will look messy.

If there is excess pie filling on the knife, wipe clean before continuing to slice. This will ensure that each slice looks pretty.

Should you refrigerate caramel apple pie?

Cover the pie in plastic wrap after it has cooled completely. Refrigerate any leftover pie covered for up to 3 to 4 days.

I love serving this pie fresh, but you can easily make this pie the night before serving.

Can you freeze this pie?

Yes, there are 2 options to do this. You can freeze the pie unbaked. Just flash freeze it for an hour.

Then cover in plastic wrap and foil. Freeze up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, bake as normal but add 20 extra minutes to the cooking time.

Another option is to freeze the pie already baked. Allow it to cool completely and cover in plastic wrap. Then place the pie inside a freezer bag.

Allow to thaw on the counter when ready to serve. Warm in the oven until heated through. Serve as normal.
Either option is perfect for holidays or when you need to save time. You will love having an extra pie in the freezer. See Can you freeze apple pie for more tips.

Pro Tips

  • Choose the Right Apples: Granny Smith apples are ideal because their tartness balances the sweetness of the caramel and they hold their shape when baked. For a more complex flavor, combine a few varieties such as Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or your favorite tart apples. Avoid overly sweet apples, which can make the pie too soft.
  • Protect Your Crust: Use foil or a pie shield for part of the baking time to prevent the edges of the crust from over-browning while the filling cooks perfectly.
  • Creative Lattice & Designs: Instead of a classic lattice, get creative by cutting shapes like leaves for fall or hearts for Valentine’s Day. You can also do a full top crust with slits for venting.
  • Spices & Flavor: Adjust cinnamon, nutmeg, or allspice to taste to enhance the apple filling’s warmth and depth.
  • Measure Flour Correctly: Spoon flour into your measuring cup instead of scooping to avoid packing, which keeps the filling light and tender.
  • Mix It Up: Add a handful of chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts to the filling for crunch, or layer in a thin layer of caramel under the apples for a gooey surprise.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and chill the pie crust while you prepare the filling.
  • Place the apple slices in a large mix. Add in the lemon juice, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Toss to thoroughly coat the apples with the seasonings. Set aside.
  • Place one of the chilled pie crusts in a 9 inch pie pan.
  • Then fill the pie crust with the apples and drizzle the top of the apples with ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce.
  • Then lay out the other pie crust on a floured work surface. Use a pizza cutter, sharp knife or pastry wheel to cut the pie crust into 16 strips that are approximately ½ inch thick. Then carefully thread the strips over and under one another to make a weave topping on top of the pie. Trim off any excess overhang on the pie. Then crimp the edges of the dough with a fork or with your fingers.
  • Gently brush the top of the lattice topping with the lightly beaten egg and sprinkle the sugar on top. Cover the crust with foil or a pie crust shield.
  • Bake the pie at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes. Remove the foil or pie shield and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F. Then bake the pie for 30 more minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling (a small knife inserted into the middle of the pie comes out clean).
  • Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack at room temperature for at least 4 hours. Drizzle the remaining salted caramel sauce on the pie when serving and enjoy!
