Salted Caramel Apple Pie is the best combination of apple filling and decadent caramel sauce. Everything is baked in a flaky pie crust and taste amazing.
Salted Caramel Apple Pie
If you love classic apple pie, you will enjoy this Salted Caramel variation. Caramel and apple pie make a great combination anyway. This recipe is so decadent because the caramel is mixed in the filling.
The pie looks really fancy with the lattice topping but we actually used a premade pie crust from the store. It is such an easy recipe but looks stunning. The entire recipe tastes great and the prep work is 15 minutes or less.
Fall is the perfect time to bake apple desserts and this pie does not disappoint. It is so yummy.
Ingredients:
- Premade Pie Crusts, refrigerated
- Salted Caramel Sauce, divided
- Granny Smith Apples, peeled and sliced into thin slices
- Lemon Juice
- Sugar
- All Purpose Flour
- Salt
- Cinnamon
- Ground Allspice
- Ground Nutmeg
FOR THE TOPPING:
- Large Egg, lightly beaten
- Sugar
How to make Caramel Apple Pie
- Preheat the oven. It should be set to 400 degrees F. Chill the pie crust while you prepare the filling.
- Place the apple slices in a large mix. Add in the lemon juice, sugar, flour, salt, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Toss to thoroughly coat the apples with the seasonings. Set aside.
- Put the pie dough in the pie plate. Place one of the chilled pie crusts in a 9 inch pie pan.
- Add the apple mixture filling. Then fill the pie crust with the apples and drizzle the top of the apples with ½ cup of the salted caramel sauce.
- Make the lattice top crust. Then lay out the other pie crust on a floured work surface. Use a pizza cutter, sharp knife or pastry wheel to cut the pie crust into 16 strips that are approximately ½ inch thick.
- Place the lattice on pie. Then carefully thread the strips over and under one another to make a weave topping on top of the pie. Trim off any excess overhang on the pie. Then crimp the edges of the dough with a fork or with your fingers.
- Top in egg wash. Gently brush the top of the lattice topping with the lightly beaten egg and sprinkle the sugar on top. Cover the crust with foil or a pie crust shield.
- Bake the pie at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes. Remove the foil or pie shield and reduce the oven temperature to 375 degrees F. Then bake the pie for 30 more minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbling (a small knife inserted into the middle of the pie comes out clean).
- Let the pie cool. Allow the pie to cool on a wire rack at room temperature for at least 4 hours. Drizzle the remaining salted caramel sauce on the pie when serving and enjoy! You can also sprinkle sea salt on top.
How to slice?
The pie needs to cool completely before slicing. It really needs to set in order for it to be pretty when sliced. Otherwise, it will look messy.
If there is excess pie filling on the knife, wipe clean before continuing to slice. This will ensure that each slice looks pretty.
Should you refrigerate caramel apple pie?
Cover the pie in plastic wrap after it has cooled completely. Refrigerate any leftover pie covered for up to 3 to 4 days.
I love serving this pie fresh but you can easily make this pie the night before serving.
Can you freeze this pie?
Yes, there are 2 options to do this. You can freeze the pie unbaked. Just flash freeze it for an hour.
Then cover in plastic wrap and foil. Freeze up to 3 months. When ready to enjoy, bake as normal but add 20 extra minutes to the cooking time.
Another option is to freeze the pie already baked. Allow it to cool completely and cover in plastic wrap. Then place the pie inside a freezer bag.
Allow to thaw on the counter when ready to serve. Warm in the oven until heated through. Serve as normal.
Either option is perfect for holidays or when you need to save time. You will love having an extra pie in the freezer. See Can you freeze apple pie for more tips.
Topping ideas:
- Ice Cream. Vanilla ice cream or Butter Pecan Ice cream would be delicious. If you want even more caramel flavor, try a scoop of caramel ice cream.
- Whipped Cream. Dollop whipped cream on top. Store bought or homemade will work.
- Caramel Sauce. Drizzle even more caramel sauce on top for a really rich and luscious dessert.
Any of these topping ideas would be fabulous. Choose one or a combination of toppings.
We love to add all 3 to each slice of pie. It is so yummy.
Variation ideas:
- Homemade Pie Crust. You can make a homemade pie crust instead of using store bought.
- Caramel Sauce. We used store bought but feel free to make your own.
- Salt. We love how the Salted Caramel tastes with the apples. However, you can omit the salt to make this a traditional apple pie.
- Cut out top. Instead of lattice, roll out the pie crust and cut out shapes. Then place on top of the pie mixture. This is a pretty alternative to lattice if you want something different.
Salted Caramel Apple Pie Tips
- Apples. The best apples for this pie is Granny Smith. They are tart and balance out the sweetness perfectly.
They also bake well and don’t turn to mush. Feel free to combine several different types of apples for a complex taste. - Foil or Pie Shield. It is important to use one of these for a portion of baking time. This will help to prevent the crust from getting too brown.
- Lattice and Designs. Get creative and make shapes such as leaves for Fall or hearts for Valentine’s Day.
This recipe is a crowd pleaser.
There is something so comforting about homemade pie. It is the best comfort food and so yummy.
Plus, your house will smell amazing as it cooks. It is a fabulous recipe and friends and family will love it.
While there are a few steps, it is not hard to make. Just follow the simple step by step instructions and make this irresistible pie.
Whether you top it with ice cream, whipped cream or more caramel, each slice will definitely be a hit. Let us know how it turns out once you try it. We love reading comments.
