Tips and tricks

  • Don’t drain the pineapple. The recipe needs the liquid.
  • Use Dry cake mix. Don’t follow the instructions on the box. You need dry cake mix in this dump cake.
  • Pineapple variety. If you can’t find crushed pineapple, buy the kind you can find. It can be placed in the blender or food processor to make into finer pieces.
  • Don’t overmix. When you place the ingredients in the baking dish, combine until just mixed and the cake mix isn’t dry.
  • Make in advance. This cake can easily be made in advance and served when desired. We recommend making it 1 day in advance if you need to make it ahead of time.

Variations for Pineapple Dump Cake Recipe:

  • Cake Mix. Substitute yellow cake mix or white cake mix instead of the angel food cake. You can even use pineapple cake mix for even more pineapple flavor. Betty Crocker, Duncan Hines or store brand all work fine in this recipe.
  • Pie filling. Add cherry pie filling with the pineapple to make Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake. Omit the fruit and just add pie filling. We like: apple pie filling, strawberry pie filling and blueberry.
  • Nuts. Sprinkle chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans on top of the pineapple.
  • Melted butter. You can add slices of butter or melted butter on top before baking.
