Red Velvet Trifle

This recipe makes it easy to enjoy all the flavors of Red Velvet Cake without the work. It starts with a cake mix so it is very simple. Cubes of cake get layered in a trifle dish with a rich cream cheese and pudding mixture.

Everything comes together for the best dessert and it is truly effortless to make. The trifle bowl allows you to see the vibrant layers. It is such a stunning dessert.

Ingredients for red velvet trifle

Ingredients: 

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix. Plus, Ingredients to prepare the cake based on the package instructions.
  • White Chocolate Pudding Mix. You can also use Cheesecake flavor pudding.
  • Milk. Cold is best.  
  • Cream Cheese. Softened at room temperature.
  • Powdered Sugar 
  • Cool Whip. Divided 
  • Mini Chocolate Chips

How to make red velvet trifle with cream cheese frosting:

  • Step 1 – Make the cake. Prepare the red velvet cake based on the package instructions in a 9X13 pan. Allow the cake to cool completely at room temperature.
  • Step 2. Cut the cake into cubes.  Reserve a small amount of the cake for the topping and crumble it to cake crumbs.

  • Step 3 – Make the pudding. In a small bowl, combine the white chocolate pudding mix with the milk. Whisk for two minutes and set aside. You can also use a hand mixer.
  • Step 4 – Make the cream cheese mixture. Place the cream cream cheese into a large bowl and beat the cream cheese with a hand held mixer or stand mixer for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the powdered sugar. Once all of the sugar is incorporated, increase the speed to medium speed and beat for 1 minute, or until smooth.
  • Step 5 – Combine the instant pudding and cream cheese mixture. Add the prepared pudding to the cream cheese mixture and gently fold and stir with a rubber spatula until completely combined.
  • Step 6 – Add the whipped topping. Then add in 8 oz Cool Whip to the bowl and fold it into the mixture until no white streaks remain.

  • Step 7 – Place layer of cake in the dish. Gently put the red velvet cake cubes in the bottom of a trifle dish or glass bowl.  Add just enough to cover the bottom of the pan.  
  • Step 8 – Drizzle the white chocolate mixture over the cake cubes.  Making sure to cover the cake.  Then continue to layer the ingredients in the glass dish until you have used all the ingredients. 
  • Step 9 – Top with the whipping cream. Then top the trifle with the remaining cool whip, reserved cake crumbs and mini chocolate chips.

  • Step 10 – Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

How to store red velvet trifle:

Refrigerate the leftovers in a covered airtight container for up to 5 days.  The flavors continue to combine as the trifle sits.

The trifle will last up to 5 days in the fridge.

Recipe tips:

  • Cream cheese. Use the type that comes in a box and not a tub for the best texture.
  • Food coloring. If you prefer a deeper red color, you can add food coloring to the cake mix.
  • Allow cake to cool. Do not attempt to make the layers until the cake has completely cooled.

Variations:

  • Add ins. You can add chopped nuts, chocolate, coconut or anything you like in between the layers.
  • Topping. Sprinkles, candy and more can be added to the top. Sometimes, we also add white chocolate chips. If making this ahead, I would advise to wait to add this until ready to serve.
  • Pudding. Either white chocolate or cheesecake pudding can be used.
  • Layers. You can easily substitute any type of cake and pudding to enjoy this year round. Chocolate cake and vanilla pudding make a great combination.
