Why This Recipe Works

Traditionally, these recipes are made in a large trifle dish. However, we thought it would be fun for parties to make individual servings. Guests can easily grab a cup and enjoy this berry trifle.

If you prefer one large trifle bowl dessert, make Red White and Blue Trifle. Start planning a July 4th Party or anything else in between and make this red, white and blue dessert. It is guaranteed to be the hit of the party with decadent trifle layers.

Ingredients

Ingredients needed - angel food cake, strawberries, blueberries, heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, vanilla extract
  • Prepared angel food cake or pound cake. We purchased store bought to make this a no bake dessert but you can use homemade.
  • Strawberries. Chopped or sliced into small pieces.
  • Blueberries. Fresh berries are best. I do not recommend frozen.
  • Heavy whipping cream. It should be cold for the best results.
  • Powdered sugar. If the powdered sugar is lumpy, sift until smooth.

Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Additions and Substitutions

  • Store bought whipped cream. Substitute the fresh whipped cream with a tub of Cool Whip or canned whipped cream.
  • White Cake. Instead of angel food cake or pound cake, use white cake. Either of these would be tasty and pretty in this trifle recipe.
  • Blackberries. Use blackberries instead of blueberries.
  • Raspberries. Use raspberries instead of strawberries or a mix of both.
  • Pudding. Try layering with a white pudding mixture. Vanilla pudding and Cheesecake pudding flavors would be delicious in the trifle recipe. We love pudding cups so this is another great idea to use a pudding mix.
  • Large Serving. Make this recipe in a traditional trifle dish. If you do not want to make individual cups, make the layers in a large trifle dish.
  • Sprinkles. Top each cup with festive red, white & blue sprinkles.
  • Food coloring. You can add food dye to the whipped cream if desired.
  • Pie Filling. You can use cherry pie filling instead of fresh strawberries.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Step 1. Get out the cups. You will need 6 clear plastic cups or mason jars for this recipe. It is best to use clear containers so the pretty layers can be seen. The cups should be 9 ounces.
Heavy whipped cream combined until thick.

Step 2. Make the whipped Cream using a separate bowl. You will need a large mixing bowl. I prefer to use my stand mixer with the whisk attachment or a hand mixer in a large bowl. Combine the heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar and vanilla on high speed until stiff peaks form.

Step 3. Arrange the layers. Place 1 layer of cake cubes into the bottom of each cup. Add a layer of strawberries (just enough to cover the cake). Don’t stir together.

Step 4. Spoon whipped cream on top of the fresh strawberries. Then place the next layer of cake on top of the whipped cream.

Step 5. Finally, add a layer of blueberries. Top with a last layer of whipped cream. Decorate with additional blueberries and strawberries, if desired.

How To Serve

The trifles taste best if served chilled. They need to be refrigerated for at least 2 hours before serving.

Pro Tips

  • Make sure the cake is large enough. If buying a prepared cake, make sure itโ€™s at least 10 ounces in order to get 4 cups according to package instructions. You want to make sure that you have enough for all of the individual cups.
  • Arrange layers. The trifle layers can be arranged into any order desired. Place the layers neatly so they look like stripes.
  • Donโ€™t make each layer too thick. Otherwise, they wonโ€™t all fit into the cup.
  • It is best to make the final layer whipped cream. This will help to keep the cake and berries in place. Then you can garnish with a few berries if you prefer. I just wouldn’t do an entire layer of fruit.
  • Other designs. You can arrange the fruit into a flag design on top.

Storage

  • Store the trifles in the fridge up to 2 days.
  • Cover tightly to ensure freshness with plastic wrap.
  • They are easy to store and taste great. However, they are best eaten fresh as they can become soggy. Since it is so simple, you can easily put this together in minutes the day of the event.
