Why We Love This Recipe
The recipe calls for minimum ingredients and you don’t need much time either. It’s so delicious and perfect for any dessert platter.
Ingredients
- Strawberries. The berries should be ripe but not overly ripe or soft.
- Blue sprinkles. I like to use sugar crystals because they look the best in this recipe.
Scroll to the bottom of the page for the complete ingredients list.
Variations and Substitutions
- White chocolate. You can use white chocolate and add blue sprinkles, blue sanding sugar or 4th of July sprinkles.
- Dip in white chocolate. Another option is to dip the strawberries in white chocolate and drizzle blue melting candy on top to make stripes.
- Use food coloring. If you can’t find blue candy melts, try melting chocolate. Just melt white chocolate and use blue food coloring to make blue chocolate.
- Cream cheese. You can stuff these with a cheesecake cream cheese filling and top with July 4th sprinkles.
How to Make Red White and Blue Strawberries
- Step 1. Melt the white candy melts. Use a microwave-safe bowl and melt the white candy melts for 30 second intervals until completely melted.
Step 2. Coat the strawberries. Once melted, dip the strawberries about halfway up. Then place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Allow to dry.
Step 3. Next, melt the blue candy melts. Then in a microwave-safe bowl, melt blue candy melts for 30-second intervals until melted. Dip a few strawberries in the blue candy melts about ¼ way up. Then cover the blue portion in sprinkles. Place on waxed paper to completely dry.
How long will chocolate-covered strawberries last?
Typically these last about 2 days in the fridge before they get mushy. When making these for Fourth of July, I like to make them either the night before or early the next day.
Storage
They can be left at room temperature for up to 24 hours if you live in a cool climate and your house isn’t hot.
However, if it is very warm in your house, it needs to be refrigerated inside an airtight container. I like to line the container with a paper towel to prevent condensation from forming underneath the berries.
Pro Tips
- Do not make these too far in advance. The moisture from the strawberries will cause the coating to shift.
- Strawberries should be at room temperature when coating. Do not dip them when they are extremely cold or right out of the fridge.
- The candy melts should be warm but not hot. This will ensure the chocolate does not fall off the berries.
- Melt the candy in intervals and stir in between each 30 seconds. This will help prevent it from burning.
- When dipping strawberries, swirl them in a circular motion. This will help prevent excess chocolate from covering the berries.
