Variations

  • Heart-shaped Cookie Cutters. Cut out heart shape pieces of brownie before serving.
  • Sprinkles. Try topping with festive Valentine’s Day sprinkles.
  • Box of brownie mix. Instead of homemade brownies, use a box mix according to package directions and add the festive mix-ins to the chocolate mixture.
  • Frosting. You can frost the brownies with your favorite icing. I love Strawberry Buttercream Frosting because it is pink! Homemade Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe is another option.
  • Toppings. Try adding crushed oreos, nuts or candy to the top. Drizzle melted white chocolate on top.
  • Butter. Swap the oil in the recipe for melted butter.
  • Other holidays. Swap the M&M’s for other holidays to make this work for lots of special occasions.

Refrigeration – For longer storage, refrigerate brownies for up to 1 week. Bring to room temperature before serving for best texture.

Freezing – Wrap brownies tightly in plastic wrap and place in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.

Layering – If stacking brownies, place parchment or wax paper between layers to prevent sticking.

Pro Tips

  • Measure flour correctly – Spoon flour into the measuring cup instead of scooping to avoid dense brownies.
  • Use quality cocoa powder – A good cocoa powder gives richer chocolate flavor.
  • Do not overmix – Stir just until combined to keep brownies soft and fudgy.
  • Fold in chocolate chips gently – Helps distribute chocolate evenly without overworking the batter.
  • Add M&M’s last – Press them lightly into the top of the batter so they stay visible and festive.
  • Do not overbake – Brownies should be slightly soft in the center when removed from the oven.
  • Cool before cutting – Let brownies set completely for clean, neat slices.
  • Use parchment paper – Makes removing and slicing brownies quick and easy.
