  • Brown Sugar. Homemade Brown Sugar Recipe is another option if you run out of store bought.
  • Butter. Unsalted butter.
  • Light Corn Syrup. This gives the popcorn mixture a great texture.
  • Baking Soda. Try one of the Best Baking Soda Substitutes.
  • Vanilla Extract. Pure vanilla extract has the best flavor.

How to Make Zebra Popcorn

  • Step 1. Preheat the oven. Set the temperature to 250 degrees F.
  • Step 2. Prepare the pan. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.  You may need 2 baking sheets based on the size that you are using.
Butter in a saucepan.

Step 3. Combine the caramel sauce ingredients. In a large saucepan, heat the ¾ cup butter until melted.

Sugar and butter mixture combined in a saucepan and boiling.

Step 4. Then stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring frequently.  Then boil for approximately 5 minutes without stirring. Stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract.  The mixture will foam up when the baking soda is added.

Caramel mixture spread over popcorn.

Step 5. Place the popped popcorn on the baking sheets and remove any of the unpopped kernels after popping. Pour this caramel mixture over the popcorn. Gently toss the popcorn to coat it with the mixture.  Bake the popcorn for 60 minutes and stir the popcorn every 15 minutes.

Step 8. Then drizzle the dark chocolate ribbons on top of the popcorn. Let the Popcornopolis Zebra popcorn set. Break the popcorn into pieces and serve!

Storage

Store in an airtight container or bag at room temperature for up to 1 week.  This popcorn makes a great gift and you can easily package it using cellophane bags.

Stored properly, the popcorn will last up to 7 days. After that, the popcorn will soften due to the chocolate and lose its crispy texture.

Pro Tips

  • Use a cooling rack to remove kernels. I like to pour the popped popcorn over a wire rack. Any unpopped kernels will fall through and the popcorn will stay on top.
  • Line the baking sheet. It is best to use foil or parchment paper to line the baking sheets. The mixture will be sticky before it sets. Clean up is much easier when you line the pans.
  • Melt the chocolate in intervals. It is important that each bowl of chocolate is melted in 30 second intervals. You will need to stir in between as well to prevent burning.
  • Drizzle the chocolate. The white and dark chocolate should be drizzled back and forth to create a zebra appearance.
  • Add ins. Feel free to add some of your favorites to this recipe. Some ideas include: peanuts, almonds or any type of nut you prefer.
  • Allow to set before storing. The popcorn needs to completely set before being stored. It will be sticky and hard to manage if you try to do this too soon.
