This delicious recipe for Red Hot Popcorn is a favorite in our house. The saltiness from the popcorn combined with the Red Hot Candies is fabulous. It is an amazing movie night snack and such an easy oven baked dessert.

Ingredients

  • Popped Popcorn. You can use an air popper, microwave popcorn or store bought.
  • Butter. Use real butter and not margarine.
  • Red Hot Candies. This gives the recipe such a unique taste.
  • Baking soda. You can use one of the Best Baking Soda Substitutes.

How to Make Red Hot Popcorn

  • Step 1. Preheat the oven and get out a large bowl.

Step 2. Melt the butter and candy in a large saucepan over medium heat. Then stir in the Red Hots, sugar, corn syrup and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil. You will need to stir constantly. Remove from the heat and then stir in the baking soda.

Step 3. Coat the popcorn. Then quickly pour the mixture over the popcorn. Toss to coat all the popcorn with the Red Hot sauce. You will need to work quickly before the mixture starts to thicken. Then place the popcorn in two large shallow baking pans. Bake for approximately 45 minutes. Stir every 15 minutes while baking.

  • Step 4. Remove from the oven.  Stir and let it cool completely. 
  • Step 5. Break into pieces and then the popcorn is ready to serve and enjoy!

Storage

You can store the leftovers at room temperature in an air tight container or bag for up to 1 week. It just needs to be sealed properly to ensure freshness.

How long will it last?

If stored properly, this red hot popcorn will last up to a week. However, if you are like our family, everyone will eat this much more quickly.

Recipe Tips

  • Popcorn. I used microwave popcorn for this recipe, but you can definitely use whichever is your favorite! 
  • Kernels. Make sure to remove any popcorn kernels from the popcorn before coating in the red hot candy mixture.
  • Waxed paper. Line the cookie sheet in parchment paper to make clean up super easy.
  • Stir while baking. Don’t forget to stir the mixture every 15 minutes while baking.

  • Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F (95 degrees C). Place popped popcorn in a very large bowl.
  • Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Then stir in the red hot candies, sugar, corn syrup and salt. Bring this mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. Then boil for approximately 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and then stir in the baking soda.
  • Then pour this mixture over the popcorn and stir it to coat all the popcorn with the red hot sauce.
  • Then place the popcorn in two large shallow baking dishes/ or pans and bake in a preheated oven, for approximately 45 minutes (stirring approximately every 15 minutes).
  • Remove from the oven.  Stir and let cool completely.
  • Break into pieces and then the popcorn is ready to serve and enjoy!
