Hot Chocolate Popcorn is a delicious blend of popcorn tossed in hot chocolate powder. Everything is coated in melted white chocolate candy melts and drizzled in milk chocolate.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Hot chocolate popcorn - popcorn, white chocolate candy melts, hot cocoa mix, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips.
  • Popped Popcorn. Remove any unpopped kernels from the popcorn.
  • White Chocolate Candy Melts. I prefer to use candy melts because they melt smoothly.
  • Hot Chocolate Mix. The powder type of cocoa mix.  
  • Mini Marshmallows. This is the perfect size for the popcorn mixture.
  • Chocolate Chips. Use good quality chocolate. You will taste the difference.

Variations

  • Dark Chocolate. Instead of milk chocolate chips, try dark chocolate chips.
  • Popcorn. I used microwave popcorn for this recipe, but you can definitely use whichever is your favorite.
  • Sprinkles. It is so fun to add sprinkles to this recipe. If you are making it for Christmas, top with red and green sprinkles. Rainbow sprinkles would be fun for a birthday party. The ideas are endless.
  • Candy. Crush candy and sprinkle on top. Some ideas include peppermint, heath bars, butterfinger, snickers and more.
  • More add ins. Some of our favorites include M&M’s. Reese’s Pieces and Caramel bits.

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1. Pop the popcorn. Pop approximately 10 cups of popcorn and place it on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.  You will likely need 2 baking sheets.

Step 2. Melt the white chocolate. Place the white chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl.  Heat in 20 second intervals in the microwave, stirring after heat interval until melted and combined.

Step 3. Top the popcorn with the white chocolate. Drizzle the melted white chocolate over the popcorn. Gently toss the popcorn to coat it with the melted white chocolate.

Step 4. Add the hot cocoa powder mix. Sprinkle the hot chocolate mix on top of the popcorn while the candy melts are still wet.

Step 5. Pour the marshmallows over the popcorn. Sprinkle the miniature marshmallows on top of the popcorn.

Step 6. Melt the chocolate chips in intervals. Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl by heating it in 20 second intervals until fully melted.  Drizzle this chocolate on top of the popcorn.  

  • Step 7. Allow to set and break into pieces. Let the popcorn sit at room temperature until the chocolate hardens on top.  Then break the popcorn into pieces and enjoy! For more chocolate flavor, serve with a Chocolate Milkshake.

Storage

You can store the leftovers at room temperature in an airtight container or bag for up to 1 week.  

Pro Tips

  • Allow to set. The popcorn needs to completely set before breaking into pieces and storing. Otherwise, it will be sticky.
  • Melt the chocolate in intervals. Make sure that you gradually melt the chocolate and stir after each interval. This will help to make sure it does not burn.
  • Make in advance. This popcorn can easily be made in advance for parties or events.
  • Hot Chocolate Popcorn is great for gifts. Place this popcorn in cellophane bags or mason jars for a great gift.
