Ingredients

Cupcakes
- Funfetti Cake Mix. Plus, the ingredients to prepare the cake mix based on the package instructions. (eggs, oil etc).
Icing
- Butter. Softened at room temperature.
- Clear Vanilla Extract. I like to use clear vanilla extract, so the frosting stays white.
- Confectioners’ Sugar. Sift before using so there aren’t any lumps.
- Milk. Whole milk is best, but you can use reduced fat if desired. You can also use heavy whipping cream.
- Green Gel Food Coloring. I like gel food coloring because it does not add any extra liquid to the frosting.
Decorations
- White Sanding Sugar. This gives the cupcakes a great texture.
- Mini Marshmallows. The perfect size for the cupcakes.
- Pre-made Icing Bunny Feet. You can find these seasonally on the baking aisle.
Get the complete ingredient list at the bottom of the page located in the recipe card.
Variations
- Bunny Feet. If you can’t find premade bunny feet, you can easily make them. Melt white chocolate chips in the microwave and spread a small oval on parchment paper. Allow to set and use for the feet. top with pink frosting so they look like feet.
- Cupcakes. We used Funfetti but you can use any kind of cupcakes you like.
How to Make Bunny Butt Cupcakes

Step 1. Make the cupcakes. Prepare the Funfetti cake batter based on the cupcake instructions.

Step 2. Combine the mixture until well combined.

Step 3. Spoon the batter into cupcake liners in the cupcake pan. Bake in the oven and then allow the cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack at room temperature.

Step 4. Combine the shortening and butter in a large bowl. Cream together until combined and smooth. You can use a stand mixer or electric hand mixer.

Step 5. Gradually add the powdered sugar. Then slowly add in the confectioners’ sugar (1 cup at a time) on low speed until well combined. Then stir in the vanilla extract and milk until combined.

Step 6. Separate the homemade buttercream icing into 2 mixing bowls. Leave one of the bowls white and then add a few drops of the green food coloring into the remaining frosting.

Step 7. Place the green frosting in a decorator’s bag with a star tip and place the white frosting into another piping bag with a round tip. With the white frosting, pipe a circle in the middle of the cupcake to form the “bunny butt”. Top the white frosting with the white sanding sugar. You can also use white sprinkles.

Step 8. Then top each cupcake with a mini marshmallow for the tail and the bunny foot.
Storage
Store the leftover cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature. If you have a cupcake carrier, this is ideal to store the cupcakes in.
They just need to be inside a container with a good lid so they stay fresh.
You can freeze the cupcakes once baked for prolonged storage. However, I suggest waiting to decorate until you are ready to serve. Allow the cupcakes to thaw and then decorate as normal.
How Long Will Bunny Butt Cupcakes Last?
The cupcakes will last up to 1 week if stored inside an airtight container.
Pro Tips
- Decorate immediately. Make sure to add the decorations immediately after you frost the cupcakes. Otherwise, they will not stick if the frosting has already fully set.
- Piping Bag. If you do not have a pastry bag, you can use a plastic bag. We have used a ziploc before. Just put the icing inside, cut off the corner and pipe as normal.
- Cupcakes. We used funfetti cake mix but you can use any variety you want. Some ideas include vanilla, strawberry, lemon or chocolate. Feel free to use your favorite type of cake.
- Don’t overfill the cupcake liners. Be careful that you do not overfill the liners. You do not want them to overflow. You also need room to decorate once baked.
- Frosting. You can use homemade or store bought. The choice is yours.
- Bunny Feet. You can make the bunny feet using white chocolate if you don’t want to purchase them. Spread white chocolate on wax paper in the shape of an oval for the feet. Once dry, dollop pink candy melts on top to form the paw prints.
- Shredded Coconut. As another option for the grass, you can use coconut dyed green. If you like coconut, this is a tasty option and you still get the visual appearance of the grass.
