Substitutions and Additions

  • Change the CandyInstead of using M&M’s use robin eggs, cadbury mini eggs, marshmallow peeps or other Easter candy. Another option is to top with Easter Jelly Beans. This is a favorite Easter treat with pastel colors.
  • Food Coloring – Add food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture to add a fun pastel color. You can do a green, purple or pink.
  • Cut into Shapes – Use a cookie cutter and cut the Rice Krispie Treats into fun Easter shapes. A Easter bunny or an Easter egg would be a fun way to display these treats.
  • Extra Marshmallows – After melting the marshmallows and butter and mixing in the cereal, I like to add in a few extra marshmallows. This adds to the extra gooey marshmallow texture.
  • Frosting – Feel free to add a frosting to your Rice Krispie Treats. This gives it so much flavor and it is a fun twist to this classic treat. I like to frost them and then add the extra sprinkles and M&M’s.
  • Add other Cereal – Add in other cereal to this treat mixture. You can add in Fruiy Pebbles Cereal as it has so many bright colors. Then top with your favorite Easter candy.
  • Vanilla Extract – If you prefer you can add in a teaspoon of vanilla extract. It gives the treats a warm flavoring.

Cereal added to mixture.

Step 4. Press the crispy rice cereal mixture into the baking dish in an even layer. You can use wax paper to make this easier.

Candy sprinkled on top.

Step 5. Top with Candy Topping. Gently press them down into the top of the Rice Krispie treats. Allow to set at room temperature for at least 30 minutes.  Then slice, serve and enjoy!

Recipe Tips

  • Pressing M&M’s into mixture – Be gentle when mixing the M&Ms into the cereal mixture as they may break.
  • Allow Treats to Set – Don’t cut into bars until they have set for at least 30 minutes. This allows the mixture to form together so it is easier to cut.
  • Pan Size – We made these treats in a 9×13 pan, but if you prefer thicker bakery style bars, use an 8×8 size pan.
  • Combining Ingredients – Combine the ingredients until just combined. Overmixing will result in the texture being hard.
  • Gently press into pan – Don’t pack the mixture into the pan. Firmly compacting the ingredients will make the bars lose their softness. This can be avoided by simply not pressing firmly into the pan.
  • Parchment Paper – I like to spray parchment paper with cooking spray to easily press the rice krispie treats in the baking dish.
  • Melting Butter and Marshmallows – When melting butter and marshmallows make sure to heat in 30 second intervals. You want to keep stirring continuously so the mixture melts. You can also melt in a large saucepan.
  • Fresh Ingredients – Make sure to use fresh marshmallows and other ingredients when making these treats. This ensures that the marshmallows melt perfectly and the cereal texture is good.

FAQs

How long will these Easter Treats last?

These Easter treats will last about a week if treats are stored properly inside an airtight container.

Can I use Large Marshmallows?

We used Mini Marshmallows in this recipe, but you can use the large marshmallows if that is all you have.
But if you try to do that with large marshmallows, the results may not be same.

How to Cut Rice Krispie treats neatly?

They are easiest to cut when taken entirely out of the pan. Place the entire sheet of rice krispies on a cutting board. We recommend lining the baking pan with parchment paper. This allows you to pull the entire treats out of the pan.

Then use a really sharp knife to cut them into individual slices. It is also helpful to spray the knife with non stick cooking spray. Make sure to wipe it clean to ensure there isn’t any build up.

Another option to cutting into squares is to use a pizza cutter. Spray the pizza cutter and cut into bars.
Either of these options should ensure the rice krispies look great.
