Chocolate Banana Bread is a rich and decadent combination of chocolate and bananas. This delightful quick bread recipe is easy to make using mostly pantry staples.

The texture is so moist and delicious combining Banana Bread with chocolate. I started making this yummy combination several years ago and it’s wonderful! If you are feeling really decadent, serve with No Churn Vanilla Ice Cream.

My kids also like to snack on Hummingbird Bread and Blueberry Banana Bread.

Why We Love This Recipe

  • Simple Ingredients. The ingredients are easy, and you probably already have most of them.
  • Great Way to use ripe bananas. Don’t toss overly ripe bananas and use them to make this bread. It helps to make it so moist and sweet.
  • Perfect combination. Chocolate flavor and bananas taste so delicious together. The texture is delicious with a tender crumb.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Chocolate Pumpkin Bread - flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, bananas, butter, eggs, vanilla, chocolate chips.
  • All Purpose Flour. Flour is most accurately measured when you spoon the flour into the cup. Don’t scoop it or you pack too much flour into the cup.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder. Double check that you are using natural cocoa powder and not dutch-process cocoa powder.
  • Baking Soda. If you run out, try one of the Best Baking Soda Substitutes.
  • Bananas. They need to be overly ripe for the best results.
  • Butter. Melted and slightly cooled.
  • Large eggs. Room temperature eggs.
  • Vanilla extract. Pure vanilla extract is recommended.
  • Semisweet Chocolate Chips. Use a good quality chocolate for best results.

Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Substitutions and Addtions

  • Nuts. It’s delicious with walnuts or pecans.
  • Chocolate Chips. Try using dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate.
  • Peanut Butter. You can also use peanut butter chips.
  • Coconut Oil. This can be used in place of the butter.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and spray a loaf pan with cooking spray.
  • Step 2. Next, get out a medium size bowl. Whisk together the flour, unsweetened coconut powder, baking soda and salt.

Step 5. Now, it’s time to combine the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients.

Wet ingredinets mixed into dry ingredients.

Step 6. Stir until just combined.  Be careful not to over mix the batter.  Then gently stir in chocolate chips. Do this by hand and not with a stand mixer.

Batter spread into loaf pan.

Step 7. Spread the batter into the 9 inch loaf pan.

Chocolate Chips sprinkled on top of batter.

Step 8. Finally, sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on top. The bread needs to bake for 50-65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or just moist crumbs.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container up to 4-5 days. You can also freeze the bread up to 3 months. Wrap in plastic wrap and place inside a freezer bag. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator when ready to use.

Expert Tips

  • Testing the bread. Make sure to not put the toothpick into a melted chocolate chip when testing the bread for doneness.
  • Frozen bananas. You can use frozen bananas for this recipe.  Make sure to defrost them completely before using them.
  • Don’t overbake the bread. You want it to be moist and delicious. Overbaking the bread will result in dry bread that isn’t as good.
  • Allow to cool before slicing. It’s important to let it cool completely before slicing or it will fall apart.
  • Double the recipe and freeze. The recipe is freezer friendly. I like to make extra to enjoy later. Simply allow the bread to cool and wrap in plastic wrap and foil. Place inside a freezer bag and freeze up to 1 month.
  • Don’t overmix the batter. Mix the ingredients together until just combined. Overmixing will make the bread more dense and not light and fluffy.
  • Muffins. This recipe can easily be made into muffins. You will need to adjust the cooking time.
