What is Chocolate Cobbler?

Chocolate Cobber is not your traditional cobbler. It isn’t topped with the biscuit type crust or have a fruit filling. It has extreme chocolate flavors topped with a cake like crust.

This cobble requires simple ingredients and it is still perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The ingredients are layered in a 9×13 pan and then topped with chocolate sugar mixture.

The Chocolate Cobbler is then baked and then filling turns out to be almost like a molten chocolate lava cake.

Butter, sugar, flour, vanilla, milk, cocoa powder, water

Ingredients for Easy Chocolate Cobbler:

  • Butter
  • Sugar
  • Self Rising Flour
  • Vanilla
  • Milk
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Water

Variations:

  • Add Strawberry Flavoring – If you love chocolate and strawberry, drop in a few spoonful’s of strawberry jam to the baking dish.
  • Chewy Caramel Flavoring – We love chocolate and Caramel together. If you have some soft caramel candies, you can add them to the baking dish. This makes for a creamy caramel sauce on the bottom.
  • Chocolate Chip Options – I love adding chocolate chips when I am making brownies or a chocolate cake. You can sprinkle in ½ cup of chocolate chips to the batter for the chocolate fans in your family.
  • Gluten Free Option – Instead of using all-purpose flour, make the cobbler with almond flour.
  • Brown SugarInstead of white sugar for the topping, you can use brown sugar.

Step by Step Instructions:

Melting butter in a baking dish

Step 1 – Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Next, melt the butter and place it in the bottom of baking pan.

Combining the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk, vanilla together

Step 2 – In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, milk and vanilla.  Stir until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

Pouring the flour mixture into the baking dish with the melted butter

Step 3 – Pour this batter over the melted butter in the 9X13 baking dish.  Use a spatula to spread it out evenly if needed.  Do not stir together.

Combining the sugar and cocoa powder

Step 4 – Then in a small bowl, whisk the sugar and cocoa powder.

Topping the flour mixture with the cocoa mixture in the baking dish

Step 5 – Sprinkle the tablespoons of cocoa and sugar mixtures on top of the cobbler batter. Do not stir this into the other ingredients.

Topping with boiling water

Step 6 – Pour boiling water over the top of the other ingredients in the pan.  Bake chocolate pudding cake uncovered until the top is golden brown or for about 40 minutes.

Chocolate Cobbler Topping Ideas:

You definitely want to serve this chocolate cobbler with ice cream. Our favorite is vanilla and it makes this cobbler even more decadent. You can use whatever flavor you prefer.

The cold ice cream melts into the hot cobbler for a treat no one will ever forget. It is so good.

  • Top with Chocolate Ice Cream – Chocolate lovers might like chocolate for double the chocolate flavor. I think rocky road would be good too. Just use what you have.
  • Whipped Cream – Another idea is to use whipped cream. We were out of ice cream once and topped each serving with cool whip. Make Homemade Whipped Cream for an easy topping.
  • Add Nuts or Chocolate Sauce – For an amazing topping option, sprinkle chopped nuts and drizzle with even more chocolate hot fudge.

Chocolate Cobbler Tips:

  • Serve Warm – For best taste and texture, make sure to serve chocolate cobber warm or at room temperature
  • Cobble is Done – You will know when the chocolate cobbler is done when the top is set and firm. Make sure not to overbake. Since there is no eggs in the recipe, you do not have to be worried if everything is cooked.
  • Full Fat Dairy – We recommend using full fat dairy options. Whole milk and real butter gives this cake a rich and moist texture.
  • Boiling Water – Make sure to use boiling water to pour over the layered ingredients. You want to pour the hot water right as it reaches the boiling point.
  • Do not Mix – As you are adding in the layers to the baking dish, do not mix.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I Freeze Chocolate Cobbler?

We do not recommend freezing this cobbler. But if you do freeze it, make sure to wrap in plastic wrap and then foil. Freeze up to 1 month and then thaw before reheating.

How to Store Leftovers:

This Chocolate Cobber is best served warm and can be left at room temperature for up to 2 days. But if you want it to last longer, store in the refrigerator. Cover baking pan with foil and place in the fridge. You can also store in an airtight container.

How to Reheat Leftovers:

When you are ready to serve again, place a serving in the microwave and heat for 30 second intervals. This will allow the cobber to be warm and gooey again.
