Ingredients for Chocolate mousse pie

Ingredients

  • Pre-made Oreo Pie Crust.
  • Semi-Sweet Chocolate
  • Heavy Whipping Cream
  • Salt
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Powdered Sugar
  • Whipped Cream
  • Chocolate Shavings

How to make chocolate mousse pie

  • Step 1. Melt the chocolate. Place the chocolate chips and 1 cup of the heavy whipping cream in a microwave safe bowl.  Heat in 30 second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is fully melted.

Then stir in salt. Be careful not to overheat. You do not want to burn the chocolate.
  • Step 2. Allow to cool. Let the chocolate mixture sit at room temperature to allow it to cool completely.
  • Step 3. Beat the whipping cream. In a separate bowl, beat the remaining heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract and powdered sugar with a stand up mixer or hand held mixer until stiff peaks form.
Melted chocolate and whipped cream.
  • Step 4. Combine the whipped cream and chocolate. Carefully fold the whipped cream mixture into the chocolate mixture until just combined.  Be careful not to overbeat or the whipped cream may get flat.
  • Step 5. Spread into pie crust. Pour this mixture into the Oreo crust and chill for at least 4 hours until the pie is set. Overnight works great too.

  • Step 6. Serve and enjoy. When serving, top with the whipped cream and chocolate shavings.  We love the whipped cream on top but it is still amazing with just the chocolate.

How to make whipped cream

Instead of store bought whipped cream, you can easily make homemade whipped cream for the topping. You only need 2 simple ingredients.

It is very simple to make and anyone can make whipped cream from scratch. If you have never tried it, homemade is so rich and amazing.

How to store

Refrigerate the leftovers, covered, for up to 5 days.  Make sure to use an airtight container or cover well with plastic wrap.

Can you make this pie in advance?

Feel free to make this in advance for special occasions, parties and more. It can be made up to 2 days in advance. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Can you freeze chocolate mousse pie?

This pie is freezer friendly. Just leave the whipped topping off. Wrap the pie in plastic wrap and foil.

Freeze up to 2 months. Allow the pie to thaw in the fridge for 24 hours when ready to serve.

Then top with whipped cream and the chocolate shavings. We do not recommend freezing with the toppings already on.

Another option is to flash freeze the pie on a baking sheet for 2-3 hours then transfer to a freezer bag. This is a good option if you are concerned with the pie sticking to the cover.

Variations

  • Homemade Pie Crust. We used a store bought pie to make it really easy. However, you can make a homemade oreo pie crust using a food processor and pie dish. I like homemade Chocolate Wafer Cookies.
  • Other varieties of crust. Oreo is fantastic but feel free to try other types of crust. Graham cracker crust is delicious as well.
  • Chocolate. Substitute dark chocolate in this pie if you prefer dark. Either option is delicious.
  • Toppings. Traditional chocolate shavings look great but you can also use sprinkles, crushed candy, crushed cookies, mini chocolate chips or fruit.

Tips and tricks

  • Chocolate shavings. Easily shave the chocolate using a vegetable peeler.
  • Pie Plate. Even if you are using a store bought pie crust, you can still put that in a pie plate. It will make the base sturdier to carry and just look nicer.
  • Don’t overheat the chocolate. Be careful that you do not overcook the chocolate or burn it. It must be melted in intervals and stirred to ensure it doe snot burn.
  • Good quality chocolate. The chocolate really is the star of the show. Make sure to use good quality chocolate for best results.
  • Allow the chocolate to cool. It is important to allow the chocolate mixture to cool before adding the other ingredients.
  • Don’t overmix. The chocolate and cream mixture should be mixed until just combined. If you over beat it will make the whipped cream flat.
