I have been making Easy Christmas Dessert Recipes for years and this Christmas Bundt Cake is a family favorite. You will love the ease of using a boxed cake mix but no one will ever guess.

Each slice is a colorful display of red and green. The homemade frosting is easy to make but tastes decadent. Festive holiday sprinkles make it perfect for your Christmas party. I also love to make Christmas Dessert Lasagna and a Gingerbread House during the holiday season.

Why We Love This

The flavor is rich and delicious and looks stunning on the dessert table. It is such an easy holiday cake recipe. Everyone will love how it tastes and it’s so gorgeous.

It is the perfect dessert to take to parties or Christmas dinner.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Christmas Cake - white cake mix, red and green gel food coloring, powdered sugar, milk, clear vanilla extract, sprinkles.

Cake

  • White Cake Mix. It is best to use white cake mix so the food coloring is nice and vibrant. You will also need the ingredients to prepare the cake based on the cake mix.
  • Red and Green Gel Food Coloring. Gel food coloring is best and makes the color so bright.

Frosting

  • Powdered Sugar. Sift the powdered sugar so the frosting will be smooth.
  • Milk. You may not need to use all of the milk. Add until it is the correct consistency.
  • Clear Vanilla Extract. Clear will not alter the color of the frosting.
  • Christmas Sprinkles. Optional but adds a nice touch to the cake.

Find the complete list of ingredients at the bottom of the page.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Step 1. First, go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2. Then, combine the cake mix based on the package instructions.  I like to use my stand mixer.
Mixing bowls with batter separated by color.

Step 3. Next, separate the batter equally into 3 bowls. Leave one bowl white. Then add the red food coloring to one bowl until it is a deep red color. Finally, add the green food coloring to the 3rd bowl until it is the vibrant green color.

Step 4. Pour the uncolored cake mix into the bottom of the bundt pan.

Step 5. Dollop the red cake batter on top.

Step 6. Then add the green cake batter on top. Use a knife to gently swirl the colors together. Do not swirl too much or you’ll change the color of the batter.

Step 7. Let the cake bake for 45-55 minutes until a toothpick or skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 8. Once cooked, the cake needs to cool for 10 minutes. Then flip onto a serving platter or cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 9. While the cake cools, make the frosting. Combine the frosting ingredients together in a large bowl. Gradually add the milk. I like to start with 1 tablespoon and gradually add more until the frosting is a pourable consistency. Pour the frosting on the cooled cake and let it drizzle down the sides of the cake.

Step 10. Finally, add the Christmas sprinkles on top of the cake. Slice and enjoy.

Storage

Store any leftover cake covered in an airtight container up to 5 days. You can also wrap in plastic wrap.

Consider freezing the cake if you need to extend the storage time. I like to flash freeze the cake for about an hour and then freeze. This helps the icing not to stick to the freezer container.

Freeze up to 2 months and allow to thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Pro Tips

  • Gel food coloring. Make sure to use gel or paste food coloring to ensure that the colors are vibrant, and the red is a bold red and not pink.
  • Gently blend the different colors. You want the cake to be a pretty marbled look and not blended together. Gently swirl the different types of batter and don’t completely combine.
  • Sprinkles. Jimmies work best because they don’t bleed.
  • Thoroughly grease the pan. There are lots of nooks and crannies in a bundt cake pan. Make sure to spray thoroughly with cooking spray so the cake is easy to remove.
  • Don’t flip the cake right away. Let the cake sit in the pan for 10 minutes before flipping on a platter. It will fall apart if you remove too soon.
  • Clear glaze. For a pure white glaze, make sure to use clear vanilla extract. If you use regular vanilla, it will have a tan hue.
