Ingredients

Ingredients for Christmas Cake - white cake mix, red and green gel food coloring, powdered sugar, milk, clear vanilla extract, sprinkles.

Cake

  • White Boxed Cake Mix: Use white cake mix so the red and green colors stay bright and vibrant. Prepare it with the ingredients listed on the box.
  • Red and Green Gel Food Coloring: Gel food coloring gives bold, festive colors without thinning the batter.

Frosting

  • Powdered Sugar: Sift for a smooth, lump-free frosting.
  • Milk: Add gradually until you reach the desired consistency.
  • Clear Vanilla Extract: Use clear extract to keep the frosting bright white.
  • Christmas Sprinkles: Optional, but they add a fun and festive touch.

Step By Step Instructions

  • Step 1. First, go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • Step 2. Then, combine the cake mix based on the package instructions.  I like to use my stand mixer.
Mixing bowls with batter separated by color.

Step 3. Next, separate the batter equally into 3 bowls. Leave one bowl white. Then add the red food coloring to one bowl until it is a deep red color. Finally, add the green food coloring to the 3rd bowl until it is the vibrant green color.

Step 4. Pour the uncolored cake mix into the bottom of the bundt cake pan.

Step 5. Dollop the red cake batter on top.

Step 6. Then add the green cake batter on top. Use a knife to gently swirl the colors together. Do not swirl too much or you’ll change the color of the batter.

Step 7. Let the cake bake for 45-55 minutes until a toothpick or skewer inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Step 8. Once cooked, the cake needs to cool for 10 minutes. Then flip onto a serving platter or cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 9. While the cake cools, make the frosting. Combine the frosting ingredients together in a large bowl. Gradually add the milk. I like to start with 1 tablespoon and gradually add more until the frosting is a pourable consistency. Pour the frosting on the cooled cake and let it drizzle down the sides of the cake.

Step 10. Finally, add the Christmas sprinkles on top of the cake. Slice and enjoy.

Storage

Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Freezer: Wrap slices tightly in plastic wrap and foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving after freezing.

Pro Tips

  • Use Gel Food Coloring: Gel or paste food coloring gives vibrant colors and keeps the red from turning pink.
  • Swirl Gently: Lightly swirl the red and green batters for a marbled look and don’t overmix.
  • Use Jimmies Sprinkles: Jimmies work best since they don’t bleed into the glaze.
  • Grease the Pan Well: Bundt pans have many crevices, so coat thoroughly with cooking spray for easy release.
  • Let It Cool Before Flipping: Allow the cake to sit in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting to prevent breaking.
  • Use Clear Vanilla for the Glaze: Clear vanilla keeps the glaze bright white, while regular vanilla adds a tan tint.
