Can you deep fry bananas?

You most certainly can. It is very easy to do and similar to banana fritters.

The trick is to use overripe banana and then dip them into pancake mix before frying. This results in delicious and golden brown bites of bananas.

Ingredients:

  • Overripe Bananas
  • Vegetable Oil for Frying
  • Pancake Mix
  • Egg
  • Milk
  • Vegetable Oil, plus more for Frying

How to make deep fried bananas:

  • Heat the oil. Go ahead and heat 3 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot or Dutch oven to approximately 350-375 degrees F.
  • Slice the bananas. After peeling the bananas, cut the bananas into approximately 1 inch thick slices.
  • Combine the pancake batter. Then gently mix together the pancake mix, egg, milk and 2 teaspoons of the vegetable oil in a large bowl.
  • Coat the banana. Gently press the banana slices into the batter until coated and then place them in the hot oil.  Cook for 3-4 minutes on high heat, turning them halfway through the cook time to brown both sides.
  • Remove bananas from oil. Use a slotted spoon to move the bananas from the oil to a plate lined with paper towels. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan.  You will likely have to work in batches.

How to serve fried bananas?

  • Powdered sugar
  • Honey
  • Maple syrup
  • Ice cream
  • Chocolate Sauce

Any of these are amazing on the bananas. You might even want to try a combination of several toppings. My favorite is powdered sugar and honey.

My kids love honey and ice cream. This is so tasty with many different variations.

Fried bananas taste great alone but the toppings take them up a level.

How to store:

We prefer these fresh but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.  They will get softer once they are stored.

I suggest placing wax paper in between the fried bananas. This will prevent them from sticking and also absorb any excess grease.

This recipe is not recommended for freezing. The texture will become mushy as it thaws.

Can I Pan Fry Bananas?

Yes, you can make pan fried bananas if you prefer. These do not have the breading and do not require deep drying.

They are delicious and caramelized. This is another great way to cook bananas.

Try this option instead of deep frying if you would rather pan fry.

Tips for Deep Fried Bananas:

  • These are best served warm. Try to enjoy these right away while they are fresh.
  • Turn the fried bananas half way thru the cooking process. This will help each side to brown properly.
  • Overly ripe bananas work best for this recipe.
  • Use your favorite pancake mix that your family enjoys. Any brand is fine including store brand.
